BSF Romans Lesson 8 Day 5

Study Romans 5:9-11

 “Not only has the reconciled man confidence that he shall escape God’s wrath, but triumphant confidence – joyful hope in God.” (Wuest, quoting Alford via Guzik)

10. Salvation — Made whole

Greek sōzō — to save, i.e. deliver or protect (literal or figurative) heal, preserve, save (self), do well, be (make) whole. (Strong’s)

• Justification—Being declared righteous before God through faith in Jesus Christ
• Deliverance—Saved from the future judgment or wrath of God. (“The wrath of God ‘revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men (Romans 1:18)’ was placed on Jesus as a substitute in the place of the believer.” Guzik)
• Reconciliation—The restoration of a broken relationship, moving from being “enemies” to being at peace with God.
• Life in Christ—A current state of existence defined by the life and presence of Jesus.
• Joy in God—A present emotional and spiritual state of rejoicing in the relationship with God.

11a. Reconciliation — Atonement

If reconciliation depended on both parties being equally capable of fixing the problem, it would be impossible. Humans, being fallen and imperfect, cannot “bridge the gap” to a perfect and holy God. We cannot offer enough good works or repentance to satisfy the requirements of divine justice.

This is why the Gospel is described as “grace.” Instead of waiting for us to fix the relationship, God did the following:

1. He initiated the process: He didn’t wait for us to seek Him; He sought us.
2. Paid the cost: He didn’t ask us to pay the penalty for our rebellion; He paid it Himself through the sacrifice of Jesus.
3. He removed the barrier: He dealt with the sin that caused the separation.

So, while it usually takes both parties to reconcile, it only took One to make that relationship possible again. Our part is not to “fix” the relationship, but to accept the reconciliation that has already been made possible by Christ. Our agreement is simply an act of faith—trusting that what Jesus did is enough.

11b. We were reconciled to God through the death of His Son (Romans 5:10 NIV)

God’s part

• Reconciled us to Himself through the sacrifice of His Son.
• Came up with the plan.
• Executed the plan.
• Jesus suffered and died an excruciating, humiliating death.
• Offered us the plan.
• Reconciles us to Himself through Jesus.

Our part —> Faith.

12. We stand now reconciled and at peace with God. (Romans 5:11 Voice)

“Jesus’ death paid our debt and reconciled us to God. His resurrection gave us His supernatural power to reign in life (Galatians 1:4).” Andrew Wommack

Christ’s death and resurrection work together as a complete transaction: His death handles our past and our penalty, while His life handles our present and our future.

Jesus’ death paid my debt so I don’t have to face the penalty for my sins. His resurrection proved He conquered death, which means He can provide eternal life for those of us who put our trust in Him. Because He is alive now, He is always looking out for us.

Boasting in Him

“Boasting” in Him means I stop trying to save myself and instead put all my confidence in what He already did.

To “boast” in Christ is the opposite of self focus. Boasting in Christ is giving all the honor, and glory to Him.

• Abandoning Self-Righteousness: Acknowledging that I contributed nothing to my salvation except the sin that made it necessary.
• Confidence in His Performance: Instead of worrying if I have “done enough” to be saved, I boast in the fact that Christ has “done it all.”
• Finding Identity in Him: My value is no longer based on my successes or failures, but on the fact that I belong to the One who conquered the grave.

Ultimately, boasting in Him is an act of humility and worship. It is the joyful declaration that my hope is not built on my own efforts, but on the unshakable reality of the death and life of Jesus.
