10. Dark Living

Dark living: wild partying, drunkenness, sexual depravity, decadent gratification, quarreling, and jealousy. (Voice)

Do not fuel your sinful imagination by indulging your self-seeking desire for the pleasures of the flesh. (Voice)

  • Culture has elevated wild partying to an art form.
  • Sex trafficking of children is big business among the wealthy and powerful.
  • Single means you aren’t currently dating or living with a romantic partner of the same or opposite sex.
  • Some states have legalized same-sex marriage.
  • Many set no value on sexual purity and fidelity. In fact, television writers poke fun at virgins and couples who delay sleeping together.
  • Lack of modesty in the way people dress and behave.
  • Television programs mocking Christians and ministers find advertising support.
  • Television programs featuring indecent teachers and now one about indecent mothers made it into network programming line up.
  • Many have lost all sense of shame. “They no longer care what people think and flaunt their sin openly, even proudly. (Guzik)” Parades in major cities promote and openly display homosexuality.
  • A romantic relationship assumes a sexual relationship.
  • Many have lost faith in marriage.
  • Disrespectful toward parents.
  • Scandals involving leaders in every sector, including ministry, abound.

11. Decency —

Behavior that conforms to accepted standards of morality or respectability.

In this case, the standards of morality and respectability are defined by God’s word.

There’s been a sharp decline in the use of the word decency since 1800.

Act as good and respectable people, living today the same way as we will in the day of His coming. Do not fall into patterns of dark living: wild partying, drunkenness, sexual depravity, decadent gratification, quarreling, and jealousy. (Romans 13:13 Voice)

Avoid patterns of dark living

“Do not fuel your sinful imagination by indulging your self-seeking desire for the pleasures of the flesh. (Voice)”

  • Wild partying
  • Drunkenness — This word (in the original text) includes intoxication by any substance. (note in TPT)
  • Sexual depravity, sensuality, and promiscuity —

Sexuality in Ancient Rome: Prostitution was legal, public, and widespread. “Pornographic” paintings were featured among the art collections in respectable upper-class households. It was considered natural and unremarkable for men to be sexually attracted to teen-aged youths of both sexes, and pederasty was condoned as long as the younger male partner was not a freeborn Roman.  (Wikipedia)

  • Decadent gratification — the opposite of temperance

Being in a state of decline or decay. 2. Marked by or providing unrestrained gratification; self-indulgent. (The Free Dictionary)

  • Quarreling, strife, being argumentative
  • Jealous of others

12. Personal application

I try to stay far away from dark living. I’m alarmed at how effective media has been at desensitizing the public about its agenda.
