9. The body of Christ — the Ekklesia

The body of Christ is a common metaphor in the New Testament. It refers to all believers in Jesus Christ.

The Greek word often translated as church means the called out ones

But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. (1 Peter 2:9 ESV)

The ekklesia includes believers past, present, and future, just as references to all Israel can include every descendant of Abraham.

We are joined to each other through the body of Christ.

  • One body and one spirit giving us life
  • We all have the same hope of seeing Christ and being transformed into His likeness.
  • We all have one Lord who is our Master.
  • There is only one faith in Christ and His atonement.
  • One baptism into Jesus Christ.
  • We are all one family because we all share one God and Father.
  • One God is above all, working through us, and indwelling every believer.

The body is joined together in Christ and maintained by the bonding power of peace.

“Jesus Christ [the head] provides leadership for his church [ekklesia], as Savior and Reviver of the body. (Ephesians 5:23 TPT)”

10. How to maintain unity in the ekklesia.

Ephesians 4:1-6

  • Live a life worthy of your divine calling.
  • Be humble.
  • Be meek — gentle, unselfish, mild.
  • Be patient.
  • Tolerate one another in an atmosphere thick with love. (Voice)
  • Make every effort to preserve the unity the Spirit has already created, with peace binding you together. (Voice)

Join together in perfect unity — Philippians 2:1-4

  • One mind — Be like-minded — come together as one in mind and spirit and purpose.
  • One passion — Don’t let selfishness and prideful agendas take over. (Voice)
  • Be united in one love. (TPT)
  • Walk together in one harmonious purpose. (TPT)

Hebrews 10:23-25

  • Encourage each other.
  • Stir up one another to love and good works.

11. My contribution

As I mentioned in a previous post, we are looking for a new place to fellowship.

I grew up singing and playing piano in the music/worship ministry because my dad was a minister of music and youth. My mom had a beautiful solo voice, and my brother played drums.

As an adult, I also worked with the youth ministry and intercessory prayer ministry.

Seven years ago, the worship leader asked a younger woman to take over the piano/keyboard.

Does the Lord have another “body part role” for me play at the local level?

For now, writing these Bible study posts that reach the ekklesia around the world fulfills a lifelong desire in a way I never imagined.
