11. The Holy Spirit, our helper

Romans 8:26-27 (RSV & Voice)

The Holy Spirit helps us pray when we are too weak and don’t know how or what to pray. The Spirit intercedes with groanings too profound for words on behalf of the saints according to the will of God.

Acts 1:8

We receive power to witness effectively when the Holy Spirit comes upon us.

Acts 16:6-10; 20:22

The Spirit of Jesus directs our steps, leading us where he wants us to go.

Ephesians 4:3-4

Among believers, the Spirit produces harmony and oneness of in the binding power of peace. Paul encourages us to diligently maintain that unity.

Ephesians 6:17

One of our spiritual weapons is “the mighty razor-sharp* Spirit-sword of the spoken Word of God. (TPT)”

*This is the Greek word, machaira, which was a razor-sharp Roman sword used in close combat. (footnote it TPT)

1 Corinthians 2:12

The Holy Spirit helps us “realize and comprehend and appreciate the gifts [of divine favor and blessing so freely and lavishly] bestowed on us by God. (AMPC)”

I lean heavily on the Holy Spirit as I prepare these lessons. If we ask for wisdom, God’s word promises he is faithful to give us what we ask.

I also trust the Holy Spirit to help me pray so that I can pray according to the will of God. Unless he reveals it to me, I’m likely to pray with my own faulty understanding and according to my own will.

12. a. “…the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.”

“O Lord, you have searched me [thoroughly] and have known me. (Psalm 139:1 AMPC)”

The Spirit also thoroughly searches everyone we mention in prayer. He already knows our every thought, every cell, the number of hairs on our heads, and our destinies. As a friend of mine recently said, “God has hundreds of possible solutions to every problem we face.” Those answers take ALL of God’s plans and purposes into account since our lives intersect with the lives of so many others including the lives of those yet unborn. His ways are perfect.

“As for God, His way is perfect! The word of the Lord is tested and tried; He is a shield to all those who take refuge and put their trust in Him. (Psalm 18:30 AMPC)”

The Holy Spirit’s help in intercession is perfect because He searches the hearts of those whom He helps, and He is able to guide our prayers according to the will of God. (Guzik)

b. Jesus, who is at the right hand of God intercedes for me. Romans 8:34

In addition to Jesus, my husband and my BSF group leader also intercede for me. Those are the only ones I’m certain of.

Those I hold in my heart — my husband and large family, our disabled tenant, neighbors, prayer requests from BSF group members, India, my city, state, and nation.

I often don’t know what or how to pray, so I ask the Holy Spirit to help me and intercede through me. I pray in the spirit more than I pray in my understanding.
