8. Obeyed from the heart

The Greek word translated as “obey” or “obedience” in verse 17 contains the ideas of hearing, responding, and obeying. Because as new creations in Christ we were set free from sin and the Law, we became slaves of righteousness.

Unlike the Law which could be followed out of fear or with a bad attitude, obedience from the heart indicates the desire and conviction of the heart. It’s by faith and because of faith in the gospel of grace.

Guzik writes, “Obeyed from the heart is a wonderful description of faith. It shows that faith comes from the heart, not only the mind. It shows that faith results in obedience because if we really believe something, we will act according to that belief.

Although I still wrestle with and act out of selfish motives at times, I recognize the sin and repent. It grieves me deeply that I’ve lived this long and still battle these things.

9. Paul teaches the law of the Spirit of life—Grace.

The law of sin and death consists of our sinful nature interacting with the Law of Moses such that we live in condemnation continually. There is another law, as Paul told the Jewish believers, that sets us free from the law of sin and death. Paul terms that law the law of the Spirit of life. (Source emphasis added)

10. Praise God for grace!

The Holy Spirit lives in me, guides me, convicts me, and teaches me.

I’m grateful that the work of the law is written on my heart. My conscience confirms this. My competing thoughts will either accuse or excuse me. (Romans 2:15)

And because “when [I] live in the Anointed One, Jesus, a new law takes effect. The law of the Spirit of life breathes into [me] and liberates [me] from the law of sin and death.” (Romans 8:2 Voice)
