Questions

2 Samuel 13

3. a. Amnon, David’s first-born son.

Amnon fell in love with his half-sister and lusted for her obsessively, as his behavior eventually shows.

He knew a relationship with her was forbidden by God’s law.

He followed Jonadab’s bad advice. (Jonadab was Amnon’s cousin.)

Amnon coveted his sister, Tamar. Exodus 20:1-17

Incest. Marriage between a brother and sister was forbidden. Leviticus 18:9

b. If Amnon had taken captive his first thoughts about Tamar, he could have avoided the path to lust, deception, and rape.

4. King David indulged Amnon’s childish request.

David allowed Tamar to come to his room and feed him. Afterward, it seems David did nothing to console Tamar or rebuke Amnon.

What Amnon did to Tamar was wrong, but he could still somewhat redeem the situation by either marrying her or paying her bride-price in accordance with Exodus 22:16-17 and Deuteronomy 22:28-29. The payment was meant to compensate for the fact that Tamar was now less likely to be married because she was no longer a virgin. Guzik

5. Comfort

Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.  Psalm 23:4 ESV

David Guzik points out that Tamar doesn’t deny the crime took place or hide the truth. She did not give place to the voice of shame saying, “This was somehow your fault.”
