2 Samuel 8

3. David was victorious over the following kings, towns, & nations

  • Edom
  • Philistines
  • Metheg Ammah (another name for Gath)
  • Moabites
  • Amalek
  • Tebah and Berothai, towns that belonged to Hadadezer son of Rehob, king of Zobah
  • Arameans of Damascus

Israel gained strength and dominance.

  • The surrounding nations became subjects of Israel.
  • Israel gained great wealth through plunder and taxation.
  • Other kings admired and congratulated David.
  • People stopped attacking and taking territory from Israel.

4. David succeeded because “the Lord gave David victory.”

We can acknowledge God through testimonies and thanksgiving for answered prayer, financial provision, healing, restored relationships, and other blessings.

We rejoice when good prevails over evil.

5. David’s plunder

David took what was the glory of the enemy and transformed them into trophies of the power and goodness of God. Those shields of gold were set in the temple and testified to God’s work in and through David. God loves to take people and things that are “trophies” for the Devil and make them trophies to His power and grace.   • David added chariots, horses, and foot soldiers to Israel’s armed forces.
  • David dedicated articles of silver, gold, and bronze to the Lord.

Today, we can use the fines and money recovered from criminals to fund recovery programs, give restitution to victims, and other humanitarian efforts preferably through faith-based outreach programs.

6. David was a strong, godly, responsible leader.

  • David didn’t just attack and kill everyone. Not all of their neighbors were hostile.
  • David maintained Israel’s boundaries.
  • He administered judgment and justice to all his people.
  • David put together a great team. “Part of David’s success as a ruler was found in his ability to assemble, train, empower, and maintain such a team.” (Guzik)
