Covenant in the Bible

The word covenant occurs an amazing 316 times in the ESV Bible.

One dictionary I consulted said the English word covenant didn’t exist until the 1400s. So I wondered, what Hebrew words are translated as covenant?

BERITH is the Hebrew word. The root of it means to cut or divide. Making an agreement often involved sacrificing an animal and walking between the pieces. (I’m thankful that is no longer common where I live.)

DIATHEKE is the Greek word used in the Septuagint translation of Hebrew into Greek. This word indicates one party is giving and the other is receiving.

SUNTHEKE is the Greek word used when equal parties are involved.

God’s covenant with David is unconditional.

Solomon eventually began to worship idols and Israel fell away from God. But Jesus still came from David’s lineage.

13. David found the courage to pray – 2 Samuel 7:27

God revealed to David that his great desire to build him a house would happen.

In light of the revelation and the unexpected, enormous display of God’s love it reveals, David boldly prays for the fulfillment of God’s promise.

When I have such a longing for something and God shows me he sees my desire and agrees with it, I’m overwhelmed by the connection I feel between our hearts.

If I delight myself in the Lord, he promises to give me the desires of my heart. Psalm 37:4 (The whole chapter is filled with encouraging promises.)

14. Psalm 89

This Psalm is an outpouring of gratitude and reciprocated love for God because of his extravagant promise.

15. The incomparable God and His covenant to David.*

*(Guzik’s title for his commentary on this Psalm.)

  • steadfast love
  • faithful
  • awesome above all
  • mighty
  • The heavens and earth belong to him.
  • strong
  • righteous
  • rules over the ocean
  • does not take away his love

This is how I can pray:

Knowing God’s attributes, his many promises and “the eternal purpose that he has realized in Christ Jesus our Lord, in whom [I] have boldness and access with confidence through [my] faith in him.” (Ephesians 3:11-12 ESV)

  • Rejoice in his name all day long.
  • Celebrate his righteousness.
  • Blessed be the Lord forever!
Amen and Amen. (Psalm 89:52 ESV)
