Matthew Lesson 26 Day 3

Study of Matthew 26:17-30

6. a. Matthew 26:17

Jesus’ disciples ask him where he wants them to prepare for him to eat the Passover meal. The Feast of Unleavened Bread was a seven-day festival celebrated in conjunction with the Passover. Exodus 12:1-20

Exodus 12:27 “It is the sacrifice of the Lord’s Passover, for He passed over the houses of the Israelites in Egypt when He slew the Egyptians but spared our houses. And the people bowed their heads and worshiped.

b. Jesus fulfills the symbols of Passover

Jesus — sacrificial lamb 1 Corinthians 5:7

Jesus entered Jerusalem on lamb selection day. It was customary for the lamb to be selected five days prior to its sacrifice. John 1:29

Jesus was without sin or corruption — unleavened bread

Jesus shed His blood — the blood of the lamb

7. a. The bread and wine of Holy Communion represent:

Luke 22:19-20—The bread represents Christ’s body. The wine represents the new covenant in Jesus’ blood.

John 6:51-58—Jesus flesh and blood are eternal life-giving bread and wine.

1 Peter 1:19—Jesus’ precious blood, as of a lamb unblemished and spotless.

1 Peter 2:24—Jesus’ sacrificed flesh so that we can die to sin and live to righteousness. Jesus’ wounds healed us. We are just as healed as we are forgiven. Why is it seemingly so easy to believe for salvation and seemingly so difficult to believe we are healed? Oh us of little faith!

1 John 1:7—Jesus’ blood cleanses us from all sin.

b. 1 Corinthians 11:23-26

“do this in remembrance of me,” “in remembrance of me”, and “…you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.” reminds us to consider Jesus’ return when we follow His instruction to take Holy Communion.

c. The above list provides excellent words for offering more specific thanks for all that was accomplished on our behalf.
