Matthew Lesson 13 Day 5

Matthew 13:24-30, 36-43

13)  In the parable of the weeds—

Two sowers—

  • The Son of Man sowed the good seeds.
  • The Devil sowed the weed seeds.

Good seed—subjects of the kingdom of God

Field—the world

Weeds—subjects of the Devil

Harvest—end of the age

Harvesters—angels

14a) While everyone was sleeping

The world and even the believers don’t always pay attention to the inch by inch advance of the weed growth. The entertainment industry through movies, television, and video games has been ideal plant food for weed growth. Their distracting and hypnotic effect has changed attitudes toward sexuality, lying, parenting, ethics, and numerous other areas.

b)  The farmer didn’t want to pull up the weeds because doing so would also uproot the good seeds.

c)  Believers often conform to the world instead of being transformed. (Romans 12:2)

d)  The farmer sows seed. It’s up to the creator to send rain that produces a harvest. (Although, Jesus later says to make disciples.)

c) Distinguishing between believers and unbelievers . . .

Sometimes it’s easy to tell the difference, but not always. You have to wait to see what it bears.

Believers often conform to the world instead of being transformed. (Romans 12:2)

Wheat and tares look similar at first, but wheat produces wheat kernels and tares don’t.

d) Focus on sowing seed instead of pulling weeds.

I heard a speaker say his neighbor was always spraying weed killer on his yard. The speaker said he focused on growing healthy grass instead because healthy grass chokes out the weeds. He was talking about success in life, but it applies here, too.

The farmer sows seed. It’s up to the creator to send rain that produces a harvest. (Although, Jesus later says to make disciples.)
