Life of Moses Lesson 26 Day 4 Deut 12-16

The Lord’s Chosen Place of Worship

Deuteronomy 12-16 Deut 12-16

9.  Deuteronomy 12

a. Destroy all the places of pagan worship—

  • Destroy all the places where they worship their gods—
    • high on the mountains,
    • up on the hills,
    • under every green tree
  • Break down their altars.
  • Smash their sacred pillars.
  • Burn their Asherah poles.
  • Cut down their carved idols.
  • Completely erase the names of their gods!

b.  Only one designated place to worship and offer sacrifices in the promised land.

God lived among them in the one tabernacle He instructed Israel to build for Him. Now, in the land He promised to give them, God would choose a permanent place for the tabernacle.

c.  When He gives you rest from all your enemies and you’re living safely in the land…Deut 12:10

In my country, and in many others, we live far more comfortably than ever. The following has circulated for a while. It is a good reminder for me when I’m tempted to complain—

If you have food in your fridge, clothes on your back, a roof over your head and a place to sleep you are richer than 75% of the world.

If you have money in the bank, your wallet, and some spare change you are among the top 8% of the world’s wealthy.

If you woke up this morning with more health than illness you are more blessed than the million people who will not survive this week.

If you have never experienced the danger of battle, the agony of imprisonment or torture, or the horrible pangs of starvation you are luckier than 500 million people alive and suffering.

If you can read this message you are more fortunate than 3 billion people in the world who cannot read it at all.”

The passion of many grows cold when in a place of rest. We have less need to depend on God. We view an education, an inheritance, or a career as our source and not God.

10.  Beware of anyone who tries to entice you to worship other gods—

  • False prophets
  • A family member or close friend
  • An entire city led astray

Today, we should add “Beware of the media.”

I’m not tempted by others touting other ways, gods, or religions.

I’m shocked at the growing popularity of Eastern religions in my country. New Age and Buddhism are “in.” Buddha statues are popular decorative objects in many homes.

Even public icons like Steve Jobs traveled to India in 1974 to find his own guru.

New Age is also popular.

Due to the buffet of available spiritual paths, if we say, “Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life. No one can get to Father God except through Him”, we Christians are labeled  as narrow-minded and bigoted.

Christianity is unpopular with those behind most of the media. Their evangelistic message promotes sin, materialism, humanism, hedonism and away from God.

1 Timothy 4:1-2 “Now the Holy Spirit tells us clearly that in the last times some will turn away from the true faith; they will follow deceptive spirits and teachings that come from demons.  These people are hypocrites and liars, and their consciences are dead.”

We need discernment. 1 John 2:20-26 And to “remain faithful to what you have been taught from the beginning. If you do, you will remain in fellowship with the Son and with the Father.  And in this fellowship we enjoy the eternal life he promised us.  I am writing these things to warn you about those who want to lead you astray.”
