John Lesson 9 Day 3

John 6:28-29

6. a. “What must we do, to be doing the works of God?” ESV

“The sense behind their question seemed to be, “Just tell us what to do so we can get what we want from You. We want Your miracle bread and for You to be our Miracle King; tell us what to do to get it.”

They were looking for a formula to please Jesus (God) well enough to receive the benefits he could provide.

Then Jesus answered, “This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent.” ESV (emphasis added)

Instead of works to do, Jesus emphasized the need to believe in God who sent Jesus.

Ephesians 2:8-10

For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. 10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.” (emphasis added)

Greek scholar Kenneth S. Wuest translated the verse this way, “For by grace have you been saved in time past completely, through faith, with the result that your salvation persists through present time; and this (salvation) is not from you as a source.”

James 2:17-20

“So too, faith, if it does not have works [to back it up], is by itself dead [inoperative and ineffective].” AMP

This type of works is fruit produced by faith. Works cannot bring us into a right relationship with God, but a right relationship with God produces works of faith.

Hebrews 11:1

“Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” NKJV (emphasis added)

b. Romans 10:1-8

I know what enthusiasm they have for God, but it is misdirected zeal. Vs 2

They cling to their own way of getting right with God by trying to keep the law. Vs 4

The law’s way of making a person right with God requires obedience to all of its commands. Vs 5

7. a.

John 20:31

“but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.”

People are made right with God when they believe that Jesus is the Messiah sent by God, who sacrificed his life, shedding his blood so we can be forgiven.

Romans 10:9-10

It is by believing in your heart that you are made right with God, and it is by openly declaring your faith that you are saved. Vs 10

The Jews were very zealous about their religion, but that wasn’t enough. It’s not enough just to believe; people have to believe the truth. Even those who are sincere can be sincerely wrong. Jesus said, “And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free” (John 8:32).  Andrew Wommack

Acts 16:31 ““Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and your household.” ESV

b. It’s so easy to slip back into a works mindset.

Such as believing I can earn God’s favor. Or that I should try. Or that I need to try. He already proved His love in the grandest gesture in all eternity.

All he asks is one thing. Believe. I’m so grateful I don’t have to keep all the Levitical laws. It is impossible and the impossibility would stress me out.

Jesus lived a sinless life and became the sacrifice for all who will believe. So thankful.
