John Lesson 9 Day 2

John 6:22-27

3. The people asked Jesus, “Rabbi, when did you come here?”

Jesus did not answer their question. If He did, He would explain that while it was dark, He walked across the water to help His disciples and then “miraculously transported [their] boat across the remaining distance of the Sea.” (EnduringWord.com)

Later in this chapter, John 6:59, John reveals that this conversation occurred in Capernaum at a Sabbath service. In Matthew 15:1, we learn that “Pharisees and scribes came to Jesus from Jerusalem.” So they were also part of the crowd.

a. Jesus knew their motives.

Instead He answered, “You’ve come looking for me not because you saw God in my actions but because I fed you, filled your stomachs—and for free.” (MSG)

They were seeking Jesus, but for the wrong reasons…

“These people were already willing to make Him their king (John 6:15), not for the right reasons of loving and obeying Him, but because they saw Jesus as the One who could provide all their needs.” Andrew Wommack

b. Balance?

It’s interesting to me that Jesus challenges the crowd not to work for food that perishes because the only work they did was searching for Him to feed them again. They also wanted to endorse Him as leader of their earthly kingdom.

The world values those who “create value in the market place” and make a lot of money for themselves.

The Kingdom of God operates on a different value system. It’s not about laying up treasures on earth, “where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” Matthew 6:19–21 ESV

4.  Jesus said,

“Don’t work (spend your energy) for food that perishes”

“The food for the supply of your natural wants. It perishes. The strength you derive from it is soon exhausted, and your wasted powers need to be reinvigorated.”  Barnes

Material things like clothing, home furnishings, vehicles, collectibles, money, real estate, political power, attention, popularity, education, etc.

“Work (spend your energy) for food that endures [leads] to eternal life (that sticks with you, food that nourishes your lasting life)”

“The supply of your spiritual wants; that which supports, and nourishes, and strengthens the soul; the doctrines of the gospel, that are to a weak and guilty soul what needful food is to the weary and decaying body.  Barnes

“But those who trust in the Lord will find new strength.
They will soar high on wings like eagles.
They will run and not grow weary.
They will walk and not faint.”  Isaiah 40:31 NLT

So we won’t miss the sound “of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool [afternoon breeze] of the day.” (Genesis 3:8)

Or know God like Enoch—”Enoch walked steadily with God. And then one day he was simply gone: God took him. Genesis 5:24 MSG

Or John in Revelation 1:10 “It was the Lord’s Day, and I was worshiping in the Spirit. Suddenly, I heard behind me a loud voice like a trumpet blast.”

“Mysteries, things which are unknown and unknowable by man , are revealed only by the Spirit.” (Ephesians. 3:3)

Jesus is talking about our priorities—avoiding temporary distractions and idols.

But first and most importantly seek (aim at, strive after) His kingdom and His righteousness [His way of doing and being right—the attitude and character of God], and all these things will be given to you also.  Matthew 6:33  AMP

5. God set His seal of approval on Jesus

“To seal is to confirm or approve as ours. This is done when we set our seal to a compact, or deed, or testament, by which we ratify it as our act. So God the Father, by the miracles which had been wrought by Jesus, had shown that he had sent him, that he approved his doctrines, and ratified his works. The miracles were to his doctrine what a seal is to a written instrument. Barnes

“And a voice from heaven said, “This is my dearly loved Son, who brings me great joy.” Matthew 3:17 NLT

“Whoever receives His testimony has set his seal [of approval] to this: God is true [and he knows that God cannot lie].”  John 3:33 AMP

Believers are sealed through Christ Jesus.

I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all, and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father’s hand.” John 10:28-29 ESV Emphasis added

Jesus prays for believersI have manifested your name to the people whom you gave me out of the world. Yours they were, and you gave them to me, and they have kept your word. Now they know that everything that you have given me is from you. For I have given them the words that you gave me, and they have received them and have come to know in truth that I came from you; and they have believed that you sent me. I am praying for them. I am not praying for the world but for those whom you have given me, for they are yours. All mine are yours, and yours are mine, and I am glorified in them. And I am no longer in the world, but they are in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, keep them in your name, which you have given me, that they may be one, even as we are one. While I was with them, I kept them in your name, which you have given me. I have guarded them, and not one of them has been lost except the son of destruction, that the Scripture might be fulfilled. John 17:6-12 ESV Emphasis added

Nothing can separate us from the Love of God in Christ Jesus! For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 8:38-39 ESV Emphasis added

“In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of his glory.” Ephesians 1:13-14 ESV Emphasis added
