John Lesson 22 Day 4

John 17: 11-19

8. Jesus continues to pray for his eleven disciples.

Protect them in the power of your name, keep them, “preserve, defend, sustain them in trials, and save them from apostasy” in your name. (Quoted text from Barnes)

“Maintain a watchful care over them in your name, which you have given me.” (Wuest translation)

The Amplified translation adds after “in your name” [in the knowledge of yourself].

the name you gave me, so that they may be one as we are one.

Jesus doesn’t pray that his disciples will leave Judea or find a good place to hide out. He wants their lives preserved; free from the evil one’s influence so they can lead others to believe in him.

Sanctify (immerse, consecrate, ) them in the truth [set them apart for Your purposes, make them holy]; Your word is truth.

9. a. They are not of the world, even as I am not of it. John 17:16 (NIV)

“Like Me, they are not products of the corrupt world order.” (Voice)

“They are no more defined by the world than I am defined by the world.” (MSG)

We have been born from above (see John 3:3). Our born-again spirits are not just human anymore. We have the divine nature of God in us (2 Peter 1:4). (Andrew Wommack)
“…unless a person is born again [reborn from above—spiritually transformed, renewed, sanctified], he cannot [ever] see and experience the kingdom of God.” John 3:3 (AMP)

“And because of his glory and excellence, he has given us great and precious promises. These are the promises that enable you to share his divine nature and escape the world’s corruption caused by human desires.” 2 Peter 1:4 (NLT)

b. Personal question

10. Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth. John 17:17 (NIV)

Sanctify them in the truth [purify, consecrate, separate them for Yourself, make them holy] by the Truth; Your Word is Truth.” (AMP) (emphasis added)

“Immerse them in the truth, the truth Your voice speaks.” (Voice)

Make them holy—consecrated—with the truth; Your word is consecrating truth.” (MSG)

Consecrate them in the sphere of the truth. The word which is yours is truth.” (Wuest)

Additional Scripture References

Holy, set apart

Counted as righteous, declared fit

New nature, likeness of God, regenerated and renewed nature, godlike

“Sanctifying is not the same as the cleansing (13:10; 15:3), but it is related to the pruning (15:2). The word used here (hagiazo) is related to the word “holy” (hagios) that Jesus has just used of the Father (v. 11). It means to consecrate, to set apart. It is used for the preparation necessary for entering the presence of God (Ex 19:10, 22) and for the commissioning for a divine task, for example, that of a priest (Ex 28:41; 40:13) or a prophet (Jer 1:5).
