John Lesson 19 Day 4

John 14:15, 21-26

9. a. “If you love me, you will keep my commandments.” John 14:15

“Keeping the commandments doesn’t make us love God or God love us. But loving God will make us keep the commandments.”
Andrew Wommack’s Living Commentary.

The word “love” appears eight times in the scripture text for this lesson.

“Keep” and “obey” God’s commands/words/teachings are repeated four times.

That same day, Jesus washed his disciples’ feet, demonstrating his love for them and how they should love and serve each other.

The commands he likely refers to are the ones he just gave them in John 13.

  • Wash one another’s feet (John 13:14-15)
  • Love one another. (John 13:34)
  • Put your faith in God the Father and in Jesus Himself (John 14:1).

So now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love. (1 Corinthians 13:13)

Today, audio and printed scripture is available in many countries, so we can read or listen to the words of Jesus and hide them in our hearts. Jesus still speaks to us directly by his Spirit, and as he said in John 10:27, “My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.”

b. Love for Jesus and scripture

My personal relationship with the Lord began when I was very young. I had an encounter with the presence of the Lord before I could read. I do not know exact age but the memory is still quite vivid. My parents were devout believers who later went to seminary and then into full time ministry.

I read my Bible just about every night as soon as I could read, attended every meeting at church, and additional Bible studies as an adult.

My brother remembers very little about our families’ spiritual life and never really had one of his own.

Our parents did not do anything differently with me than they did with him, and we attended the same or similar classes and meetings.

Those who inspire me the most are ones I’ve sought out on my own through books and now also online teachings; Ones who help me understand my own journey which has been rich with dreams, experiences, and encounters. Also, various Bible translations, commentaries, concordances, and study of Hebrew.

I hope that sharing my answers on this website encourages others to love Jesus more deeply and pursue him through reading his love letters and through one on one conversations with him.

10. “We will come and make our home with him.” John 14:23

“Where love and obedience are shown, the presence of God and of Christ is realized; the Father and the Son together make their home with each of the children.” (Bruce) (emphasis added)

One translation says “loving me empowers you to obey my word.” TPT

Another verse comes to mind—”Do you not know that you are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in you?” 1 Corinthians 3:16

Scriptures about abiding have a similar meaning. In Chapter 15, Jesus continues to teach on this theme.

11. a. John 14:26 and 1 Corinthians 2:12-14

None of Jesus’ words were written down for them to reference until later. He reassured them that after his departure, “the Helper, the Holy Spirit whom the Father will send in my name. . .”

  • will teach you all things and
  • bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.
  • understanding of the things freely given to us by God.
  • So we can impart these words we have been taught by the Spirit.
  • The Spirit enables us to understand them because they must be spiritually discerned.

b. Holy Spirit often quickens a verse or phrase

While preparing these lessons, it happens frequently. It happened at least three times during this one lesson.

Often, I do not recall the entire verse or the context, but it is so easy to lookup using internet search. For years, I used the concordance in the back of my Bible until my dad gave me a copy of Strongs.

Holy Spirit also reminds me of verses during conversations, during prayer, while I’m writing in my journal, thinking about a situation . . . It pays to hide God’s word in your heart. It is a gold mine of wisdom and knowledge.
