John Lesson 14 Day 5

John 10:34-42

The crowd divided

12. John 10:34-38

Jesus did not panic, run away, or hide when the religious leaders were about to stone him. He stopped them with His word.

In John 10:35 Jesus clarified the meaning of Psalm 82:6 when He said, “You are gods, sons of the Most High, all of you; nevertheless, like men you shall die, and fall like any prince.”

The Psalmist called the judges gods as a metaphor. There is but one God. Jesus cleverly refers to this metaphor to point out the “ignorance and inconsistency of His accusers.” Guzik

“The judges of Psalm 82 were called “gods” because in their office they determined the fate of other men. Also, in Exodus 21:6 and 22:8-9, God called earthly judges “gods.” EnduringWord

Jesus was doing the works of His Father. If they did not believe Him, at the very least they should believe the supernatural works that He was doing among them.

“Jesus reasoned, “If God gave these unjust judges the title ‘gods’ because of their office, why do you consider it blasphemy that I call Myself the ‘Son of God’ in light of the testimony of Me and My works?” Guzik

13. a. Again, Jesus’ enemies failed to capture Him.

Even though the Jewish leaders had Jesus surrounded, He escaped supernaturally.

Trench wrote, “. . . the power that emanated from Him preventing their laying hands on Him: it was the same power that he allowed to issue from Him on the night of His arrest.”

God did not allow man to in stop His plan. Jesus must fulfill His destiny.

b. God is able to deliver me.

For the law of the Spirit of life has set [me] free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death.” Romans 8:2 ESV

14. John 10:40-42

When Jesus went beyond the Jordan many believed in Him there. They heard John the Baptizer’s teaching believed what he said was true.

It is interesting that John the Baptizer, Jesus’ cousin, stayed away from the corrupt temple. Jesus took the Jewish leaders head on.

15. Belief and unbelief

With those who are not receptive or downright hostile to the good news about Jesus, eventually we walk away and find those who are willing to listen. Holy Spirit will help us to present the truth and escape when needed.
