John Lesson 12 Day 4

John 8:31-47

The Son gives freedom

11. a. So if the Son makes you free, then you are unquestionably free. John 8:36 AMP

Freedom—delivered from the bondage and dominion of sin. (Barnes)

A Messianic prophecy announcing freedom to all captives, fulfilled by Jesus.

“The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me,
because the Lord has anointed me
to bring good news to the poor;
he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted,
to proclaim liberty to the captives,
and the opening of the prison to those who are bound;” Isaiah 61:1 ESV

The key to freedom

“If you abide in [embrace] My word [hold fast to My teachings and live in accordance with them],  . . . you will know the truth, and the Truth will set you free.” John 8:31-32 AMPC

“The truth Jesus gives us releases us from the bondage of our past, the bondage of our sins, and the bondage of religion. Jesus is speaking these words to those who were not fully free from man’s traditions. Truth must be embraced and worked out through the divine process of spiritual maturity. The Greek word for “truth” is reality. To embrace the reality of Christ brings more freedom into your life. See the book of Galatians for a clear explanation of the freedom Jesus refers to here.” (footnote on John 8:32 in TPT Bible, emphasis added)

b.  Freedom from condemnation

Freedom from condemnation and the feeling that I must earn this freedom.

I learned to embrace Jesus’ unfailing love. His Father is my Father and I am His beloved child. Abba Father doesn’t disown me or think I’m a disappointment. He has good plans for me.

He lovingly guides me, sustains me, encourages me, picks me up over and over, finds me when I get lost, rescues me when I get tangled up, leads me back to the right path, lights that path one step at a time, prays for me, and so much more.

12. a. The Jews boasted, “Abraham is our father”.

“…and do not presume to say to yourselves [as a defense], ‘We have Abraham for our father [so our inheritance assures us of salvation]’; for I say to you that from these stones, God is able to raise up children (descendants) for Abraham.” Matthew 3:9 AMP

“…My word has no place [to grow] in you [and it makes no change in your heart].” John 8:37b AMP

“That is, you do not embrace my doctrine, or it exerts no influence over you. The original word conveys the notion that there was no room for his doctrine in their minds. It met with obstructions, and did not penetrate into their hearts. They were so filled with pride, and prejudice, and false notions, that they would not receive his truth; and as they had not his truth or spirit, and could not bear it, they sought to kill him.” Barnes

Jesus was and is the Holy Son of God—the creator—the Savior—the Deliverer.

The Jews were the descendants promised to Abraham by the God whose Son they now wanted to kill.

b. Satan was a murderer from the beginning—

The word for devil in Greek means “slanderous, accusing falsely.” (Strongs Greek: 1228)

In the Aramaic, the word used here means “adversary.” It is taken from a root word that means “to ridicule” or “to gnaw.” (Footnote on John 8:44 TPT)

John 8:44-45 (BBE)
You are the children of your father the Evil One and it is your pleasure to do his desires. From the first he was a taker of life; and he did not go in the true way because there is no true thing in him. When he says what is false, it is natural to him, for he is false and the father of what is false.
But because I say what is true, you have no belief in me.”

Genesis 3
Satan lied to Eve causing her to doubt God’s truthfulness and loving kindness toward his creations. He said, “You won’t die!…God knows that your eyes will be opened as soon as you eat it, and you will be like God…” Genesis 3:4-5 NLT

c. Get to know Father God, His Son, and Holy Spirit

God desires to have an intimate, personal relationship with us. He says to seek His face. Face to face. “You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.” Jeremiah 29:13

Jesus said the Scriptures reveal who He is (Luke 24:27; Luke 24:44-45; John 5:39)

Genesis through Revelation is a God-breathed account of God’s plans and purposes throughout history.

But when the Helper comes (ESV), “whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of Truth Who comes (proceeds) from the Father, He [Himself] will testify regarding Me.” John 15:26 AMPC

Like they say about how to recognize counterfeit money, when you know what the real thing looks like and feels like, it is easy to spot a fake.
