John Lesson 12 Day 3

John 8:12-30

I am the light of the world.

6.  Jesus said,

“I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” John 8:12 ESV

“Barclay and several others connects the light of the world sayings with a ceremony associated with the Feast of Tabernacles known as The Illumination of the Temple. “It was the custom during the first night, if not during every night, of the feast of tabernacles, to light up two large golden chandeliers in the court of the women, the light of which illuminated all Jerusalem. All that night they held a festal dance by the light.” (Alford)

But you can depend on it (my word) being true. I know where I’ve come from and where I go next.

My judgment is true and My decision is right; for I am not alone [in making it], but I and the Father who sent Me [make the same judgment]. (AMP)

If you knew me, you would at the same time know the Father.”

What this means to me:

“But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.” 1 Peter 2:9 ESV

Jesus, the Word, lights my path [Psalm 119:105] throughout my life. When I keep my eyes focused on him, I’m not left in the dark. [Deuteronomy 31:6; Hebrews 13:5]

7. Jesus testimony about himself is true.

John 8:13-20

Jesus wasn’t the only one who bore witness of who He really was. The Father bore witness through the miracles he performed (John 8:18) and John the Baptist bore witness, too. (John 5:32-33).” Andrew Wommack Living Commentary

Jesus bears witness about Himself because He knows where He came from and where He is going. (John 8:14)

God the Father bears witness about Jesus. (John 8:18)

In your Law it is written that the testimony of two people is true.” John 8:17 ESV

The Pharisees asked, “Where is your father?” They may have intended this question to be an insult because Mary claimed He was born of a virginal conception.

8.  Contrast between Jesus and his listeners

  • When Jesus said, “I am the light of the world“, “This was a strong and eloquent contrast to the darkness of those opposing Jesus, those who just brought to Him the woman caught in adultery.” (David Guzik)
  • “Where I am going, you cannot come.”

Jesus is going back to His place in the heavenly realm. They will stay in the world.

  • You are from below; I am from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world.” John 8:23

Jesus, the Son of God, came to earth from the heavenly realm where He was in full fellowship with the Father. They, on the other hand, are the complete opposite.

You are of your father the devil, and your will is to do your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks out of his own character, for he is a liar and the father of lies. ” John 8:44 (ESV)

  • You judge according to the flesh; I judge no one.” John 8:15

Jesus spoke these words to the religious leaders/Pharisees. They judged according to the flesh—descendant of Abraham or Gentile, circumcised or uncircumcised, “righteous” Pharisee versus ignorant, etc.

“We see here how difficult it is to excite wicked men to the contemplation of heavenly things. They interpret all things in a low and corrupt sense, and suppose all others to be governed as they are themselves.” Barnes

9. “Who are you?” the Pharisees asked.

“So they said to him, “Who are you?” Jesus said to them, “Just what I have been telling you from the beginning.” John 8:25

Jesus is . . .

  • The Son of Man. John 6:53; John 9;35; John 1:51; John 9:35-37
  • He is the Messiah, the Anointed One. To the Samaritan woman Jesus said, “I who speak to you am He.” John 4:26
  • Jesus claims that He came from above, Heaven, where God dwells. John 8:23
  • He does what he sees His Father doing, the things that please the Father. John 5:19; Isaiah 42:1; John 8:29; Mark 1:11
  • Our access to God the Father because Jesus is our mediator, our intercessor, and our high priest.

10.  Jesus said he would be lifted up.

John 8:28

“So Jesus said to them, “When you have lifted up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am he, and that I do nothing on my own authority, but speak just as the Father taught me.” ESV

Jesus said this because He was going to be crucified.

John 12:31-33

“‘Now is the judgment of this world; now will the ruler of this world be cast out. And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself.’ He said this to show by what kind of death he was going to die.”

His means of death also conveys additional symbolism.

John 3:14-15

“In the same way that Moses lifted the serpent in the desert so people could have something to see and then believe [see Numbers 21:9], it is necessary for the Son of Man to be lifted up—and everyone who looks up to him, trusting and expectant, will gain a real life, eternal life. John 3:14-15 (MSG emphasis added)

1 Corinthians 6:14

“And God will raise us from the dead by his power, just as he raised our Lord from the dead. (NLT)
