John Lesson 10 Day 4

John 6:60-66

9. a. The Spirit gives life and the flesh counts for nothing.

The Spirit can make life.

“Sheer muscle and willpower don’t make anything happen.” John 6:63 MSG

“But the natural [unbelieving] man does not accept the things [the teachings and revelations] of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness [absurd and illogical] to him; and he is incapable of understanding them, because they are spiritually discerned and appreciated, [and he is unqualified to judge spiritual matters].” 1 Corinthians 2:14 AMP

“So we don’t look at the troubles we can see now; rather, we fix our gaze on things that cannot be seen. For the things we see now will soon be gone, but the things we cannot see will last forever.” 2 Corinthians 4:18 (NLT)

“Our lives in this physical realm are “nothing but a wisp of fog, catching a brief bit of sun before disappearing.”   James 4:14 (MSG)

b. This is what I think. It helps me grasp the concept of oneness with Christ.

Did you know 99.9999999999996% of our bodies is empty spaceIt’s no wonder we can feel an emptiness without Him. It’s that empty feeling that drives people to try crazy substitutes.
I believe we partake of Him with our entire being through desire. Our desire for an intimate relationship with Him draws Him to overshadow and fill us.
As believers, filled with His Spirit come together we become the church—the Body of Christ. The Church should fill the world’s emptiness.
The church, you see, is not peripheral to the world; the world is peripheral to the church. The church is Christ’s body, in which he speaks and acts, by which he fills everything with his presence. Ephesians 1:22-23 MSG

If we individually present our bodies—our very lives as a living sacrifice and come together with others who choose to do the same, just imagine the possibilities. Would we spill out into the streets and see thousands saved in one day? (See Acts 2)

10. a. Jesus’ disciples turned away.

Under the Old Covenant, the Jews weren’t even allowed to eat meat that still had blood in it. The idea of consuming the drained blood certainly sounded even more offensive and disgusting.

“Only be sure that you do not eat the blood, for the blood is the life (soul), and you shall not eat the life with the meat.” Deuteronomy 12:23 AMP

“Judaism does not see your body as meat, because we human beings are considered to be sufficiently unlike animals not to be in that category.” Rabbi Zvi Solomons

Prohibitions against touching dead bodies

“Anyone who touches a dead body is ritually unclean for seven days. He must purify himself with the Water-of-Cleansing on the third day; on the seventh day he will be clean.” MSG (See Numbers 19:11-13)

b. Offended by Jesus

I’ve loved Jesus for as long as I can remember. I grew up with the Bible.

However, I’m offended by some of my own thoughts and behaviors. But because I eat his flesh and drink his blood he sees me just as if I never sinned. Such amazing grace.

11. a. The world’s response to Jesus.

Many in the world today don’t know know about Jesus. Or they have heard just enough to reject him. They are self-centered and don’t want anyone to tell them what to do.

But many others are turning to Jesus.

b. My response

I’m so thankful to eat his flesh and drink his blood. I’m thankful to know he loves me, and I am accepted in the beloved. (Ephesians 1:5-6)
