Genesis Lesson 6 Day 5

Genesis 9:8-17

God gave an unconditional covenant to humanity and all creation.

12. God’s covenant with Noah, his sons, all descendants, and every living creature.

When Yahweh smelled the pleasant aroma [of the burning sacrifice] He said in his heart,

I will never do it again—I will never again curse the earth, destroying all living things, even though man’s bent is always toward evil from his earliest youth. . .

As long as the earth remains, there will be springtime and harvest, cold and heat, winter and summer, day and night. (Genesis 8:21-22)

Never again will I send another flood to destroy the earth.

I have placed MY rainbow in the clouds as a sign of my promise until the end of time, to you and all the earth.4

13. He loves us.

Merciful: Despite man’s evil ways, God promised not to destroy all humans again. (He wanted to wipe out Israel and start over with Moses, though. Exodus 32:10)

Faithful: God keeps His word.

Prevention: God imprisoned the angels who sinned with human women (Jude 6) and shortened the lifespan of man.

However, when things again become similar to the days of Noah (Matthew 24:37), God will destroy the earth—but by fire, not by flood (2 Peter 3:1-7).

14. a. Rainbow covenant

Yahweh’s glorious presence

As the appearance of the rainbow that is in the cloud in the day of rain, so was the appearance of the brightness all around.

This was the appearance of the likeness of Yahweh’s glory. When I saw it, I fell on my face, and I heard a voice of one that spoke. Ezekiel 1:28

Immediately I was in the Spirit. Behold, there was a throne set in heaven, and one sitting on the throne that looked like a jasper stone and a sardius. There was a rainbow around the throne, like an emerald to look at. Around the throne were twenty-four thrones. On the thrones were twenty-four elders sitting, dressed in white garments, with crowns of gold on their heads. Revelation 4:2-4

I saw a mighty angel coming down out of the sky, clothed with a cloud. A rainbow was on his head. His face was like the sun, and his feet like pillars of fire. He had in his hand a little open book. He set his right foot on the sea, and his left on the land. Revelation 10:1-2

b. An everlasting covenant

It would be hard to imagine the Lord forgetting one of His promises. This is probably more of an assurance to us that He will never forget than an actual reminder to Him.2

God not only remembers when He sees the rainbow in our clouds on earth, He also sees the rainbow around His throne. He truly does not want to forget His covenant.

This beautiful passage in Isaiah 54:6-10 also reflects God’s unfailing love for His created ones:

For Yahweh has called you as a wife forsaken and grieved in spirit,
even a wife of youth, when she is cast off,” says your God.

“For a small moment I have forsaken you,
but I will gather you with great mercies.
In overflowing wrath I hid my face from you for a moment,
but with everlasting lovingkindness I will have mercy on you,” says Yahweh your Redeemer.

“For this is like the waters of Noah to me;
for as I have sworn that the waters of Noah will no more go over the earth,
so I have sworn that I will not be angry with you, nor rebuke you.
For the mountains may depart,
and the hills be removed;
but my loving kindness will not depart from you,
and my covenant of peace will not be removed,”
says Yahweh who has mercy on you.

As I complete this post, I hear and see the pouring rain just outside my office—the remnants of a hurricane that claimed six lives miles from here. I’ve endured many similar storms myself. It’s one reason we moved further inland.

Not sure where I’m going with that thought except to say, it’s good to know God is faithful. I pray this nation and the world turn to Him with all our hearts. He’s worthy of it all.
