Genesis 8:1-14

Throughout history, humankind has worked to remain self-directed, but this has not brought us back to God. We will not find our way back to God. Only God can bring us back to Himself, and He is. This is the story of the Bible. Brian Hardin, The God of Your Story, p. 2*(affiliate link)

3. Noah did everything that Yahweh commanded him.

God gave Noah seven days notice to board the ark with his family, the animals, and food for everyone. On the seventh day, they boarded the ship.

“The fountains of the great deep burst open, and sky’s windows opened. It rained on the earth for forty days and forty nights. . . . All flesh died that moved on the earth. . . . Only Noah was left, and those who were with him in the ship. The waters flooded the earth one hundred fifty days. Genesis 7: 11, 21, 23-24

4. a. God remembered Noah and ended the Flood.

The deluge began in the second month, on the seventeenth day of the month. Genesis 7:11

In the second month, on the twenty-seventh day of the month, the earth was dry. Genesis 8:14

God spoke to Noah, saying,“Go out of the ship, you, your wife, your sons, and your sons’ wives with you. Bring out with you every living thing that is with you of all flesh, including birds, livestock, and every creeping thing that creeps on the earth, that they may breed abundantly in the earth, and be fruitful, and multiply on the earth.” Genesis 8:15-17

God remembered

God never forgets His own. But this is speaking of a special attention the Lord paid to all that were in the ark. Notice that this remembering wasn’t limited to the people on the ark. God remembered the animal creation, too. 3

  • God caused a wind to pass over the earth so that the waters subsided.
  • The deep’s fountains and the sky’s windows were stopped.
  • He held back the rain.
  • As a result, the waters continually receded from the earth, and after 150 days, the ship rested on Ararat’s mountains.
  • One year after entering the ship, God spoke to Noah, saying, “Go out of the ship, you, your wife, your sons, and your sons’ wives with you. Bring out with you every living thing that is with you of all flesh. . ..”

b. Lessons learned and notes to self about God and Noah

  • Obey
  • Wait on the Lord
  • Don’t doubt God’s goodness
  • Noah didn’t leave the ship when the surface appeared dry. If he let the animals out too soon, they would have mired down in the mud underneath the surface. But he waited until God said to go out

I’m reminded of my son’s mountain hiking trip in early spring a few years ago. In some places, his legs sank deeply in the mud.

5. Wait for and confidently seek the Lord.

  • For God’s people, who are called by His name, to humble themselves, pray, seek His face, and turn from their wicked ways. . .

Yahweh appeared to Solomon by night, and said to him, “I have heard your prayer, and have chosen this place for myself for a house of sacrifice.

“If I shut up the sky so that there is no rain, or if I command the locust to devour the land*, or if I send pestilence among my people; if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves, pray, seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, will forgive their sin, and will heal their land. Now my eyes will be open and my ears attentive to prayer that is made in this place. 16 For now I have chosen and made this house holy, that my name may be there forever; and my eyes and my heart will be there perpetually. 2 Chronicles 7:12-16

  • My husband and I eagerly wait for God to show us our roles in this new place and chapter of our lives. He sent us here, so we know He has a plan to use us and provide for us.

Wait for and confidently expect the Lord; Be strong and let your heart take courage; Yes, wait for and confidently expect the Lord. Psalm 27:14 AMP

And therefore the Lord [earnestly] waits [expecting, looking, and longing] to be gracious to you; and therefore He lifts Himself up, that He may have mercy on you and show loving-kindness to you. For the Lord is a God of justice. Blessed (happy, fortunate, to be envied) are all those who [earnestly] wait for Him, who expect and look and long for Him [for His victory, His favor, His love, His peace, His joy, and His matchless, unbroken companionship]! Isaiah 30:18 AMPC

It’s encouraging to read testimonies and know how deeply God earnestly desires a relationship with anyone willing to seek Him.
