Genesis 7

Every living thing died except those in the ark.

13. Every living thing was destroyed that was on the surface of the ground.

In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, in the second month, on the seventeenth day of the month, on that day all the fountains of the great deep burst open, and the sky’s windows opened. It rained on the earth forty days and forty nights. Genesis 7:11-12

God didn’t directly announce the coming judgment to anyone else, but Noah. But Noah probably warned people, because that’s what prophets do.

2 Peter 2:5 says Noah was a preacher of righteousness. Surely people questioned Noah why he, a farmer, was building a giant barge on his property, and I assume he warned them about the coming flood.

Did God mercifully give the ungodly 120 years to repent?

14. God’s word is settled in heaven forever.

Yahweh, your word is settled in heaven forever.
Your faithfulness is to all generations.
You have established the earth, and it remains. Psalm 119:89-90

However, God changed His mind about destroying Nineveh because they repented. (Jonah 3)

Jeremiah 18:7-10 At the instant I speak concerning a nation, and concerning a kingdom, to pluck up and to break down and to destroy it; if that nation, concerning which I have spoken, turns from their evil, I will repent of the evil that I thought to do to them. At the instant I speak concerning a nation, and concerning a kingdom, to build and to plant it; if they do that which is evil in my sight, that they not obey my voice, then I will repent of the good with which I said I would benefit them.

I think the days of Noah were different because of the Nephilim—the abnormal corruption of human DNA.

15. Fear of God

Yahweh will judge his people and have compassion on his servants. Psalm 135:14

When people reject God, the fear of God relates to judgment and separation from God for all eternity.

For those who believe, the fear of God means reverence and awe.

It’s good to know God had mercy on the godly who lived among such an evil and perverse people.

God didn’t spare the ancient world or rebellious angels (2 Peter 2:5)—

In Noah’s day, the flood destroyed the entire surface of earth and every living thing on it. Only the living beings in the ark survived.

God could destroy all life on earth again, but He made a covenant with Noah promising not to.

. . . the Lord knows how to deliver the godly out of temptation and to keep the unrighteous under punishment for the day of judgment 2 Peter 2:9
