Genesis Lesson 4 Day 3

Genesis 4:8-12

We prevent sin from ruling over us by allowing God to master us first. Without God as our master, we will be slaves to sin. (Guzik)1

7. Pride goes before destruction. Proverbs 16:18

. . . and an arrogant spirit before a fall.

Whoever offers the sacrifice of thanksgiving glorifies me,
and prepares his way so that I will show God’s salvation to him.” Psalm 50:23

It appears Cain didn’t consider repentance, only revenge. The root of resentment toward God for cursing the ground and accepting his brother’s offering ran too deeply.

Cain talked with his brother, and while they were out in the field, he murdered Abel.

The sense is that Cain planned to catch Abel by surprise, lulling him with pleasant conversation. This shows Cain committed premeditated murder, and therefore clearly ignored God’s way of escape. 1

8. The Lord confronts Cain.

God asked Cain, “Where is your brother?” Cain lied, “I don’t know. Am I my brother’s keeper?”

The Lord doesn’t ask questions to get information. He already knows what happened.

Yahweh said, “What have you done? The voice of your brother’s blood cries to me from the ground. 11 Now you are cursed because of the ground, which has opened its mouth to receive your brother’s blood from your hand. 12 From now on, when you till the ground, it won’t yield its strength to you. You will be a fugitive and a wanderer in the earth.”

Even Cain’s success in farming is taken away from him.

Spurgeon was shocked at the way Cain replied to God: “The cool impudence of Cain is an indication of the state of heart which led up to his murdering his brother; and it was also a part of the result of his having committed that terrible crime. He would not have proceeded to the cruel deed of bloodshed if he had not first cast off the fear of God and been ready to defy his Maker.” 1

9. a. How can someone defy God so directly?

Pride and jealousy

Sibling rivalry

Cain was the number one son. The firstborn. How humiliating that God rejected his occupation. (That’s not exactly what happened, but don’t we misinterpret situations? I know I do.)

To bring an acceptable sacrifice, he needed to barter with his brother for a lamb. Since the firstborn lamb was “taken,” it would have to be a second born or whatever was still available.

It’s hard to imagine anyone could defy God so directly, showing no fear. Yet we see rampant, shocking defiance of God in our society today.

What causes fights and quarrels among you? Don’t they come from your desires that battle within you? You desire but do not have, so you kill. You covet but you cannot get what you want, so you quarrel and fight. You do not have because you do not ask God. James 4:1-2

b. Victory over temptation

for everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith. 1 John 5:4 NIV

Learn God’s ways by taking His word to heart.

Jesus gave us guidance to live by.

Therefore, whatever you desire for men to do to you, you shall also do to them; for this is the law and the prophets. Matthew 7:12

Grace for when our best efforts don’t work

If it is possible, as much as it is up to you, be at peace with all men. Romans 12:18 (emphasis added)

10. Genesis 4:1-12 — temptation and sin

If we love others, we rejoice when they succeed. “Do nothing from rivalry or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves.” Philippians 2:3

Be sober and self-controlled. Be watchful. Your adversary, the devil, walks around like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. 1 Peter 5:8

Receive Holy Spirit’s conviction of sin, repent, and turn away from it.
