Genesis Lesson 28 Day 4

Genesis 48:1-14

Joseph brought his two sons to Jacob.

10) Jacob blesses Joseph and his sons.

When Jacob blesses Joseph, he doesn’t bestow the birthright as we expect. He speaks under prophetic inspiration.

He adopts Ephraim and Manasseh as his sons, bypassing Joseph as head of a tribe. By doing this, Joseph receives a double portion inheritance. The children Joseph fathered after them will inherit land listed under their brother’s names.

Joseph brought them close to Jacob who hugs and kisses them. He intentionally positions the teens so that Manasseh, the firstborn, was on Jacob’s right and Ephraim on his left. Jacob reaches out crossing his arms so that his right hand is on Ephraim’s head and his left on Manasseh’s head. This displeases Joseph so he takes his father’s hand and points out his mistake. Even though Jacob has lost his eyesight, he says, “I know, my son, I know.”

“The right hand is associated with God’s strength (Exodus 15:6), favor (Psalm 16:11), and help (Psalm 20:6). This is why Jesus is described as sitting at the right hand of God the Father (Mark 14:62).”1

“God chose him to take the position of firstborn. Jeremiah 31:9 described this: For I am a Father to Israel, and Ephraim is My firstborn (Jeremiah 31:9).”1

11a) The firstborn passed over for God’s choice.

  • Seth over Cain
  • Shem over Japheth
  • Isaac over Ishmael
  • Jacob over Esau
  • Ephraim over Manasseh

b) God is sovereign. His choice and blessings don’t follow—

  • traditions
  • customs
  • privilege
  • birth order
  • parental favoritism

12) Life lessons learned through the lives of Jacob and Joseph.

I chose to post a question and answer from the previous study of Genesis.

  • It won’t always look or feel like God is using us.
  • He may choose to use someone who rubs us the wrong way.
  • God’s plans may take a L O N G time. We may not live to see the promises fulfilled.
  • But God is faithful.
  • Prayer: that I remember all of the above.
