Genesis Lesson 26 Day 4

Genesis 44:1-17

Benjamin was accused of stealing Joseph’s silver cup.

11) Joseph had his steward put his silver cup in Benjamin’s sack.

He tested the hearts of his brothers once more to bring them to complete repentance.

The brothers know they are innocent but make a rash statement just as their father, Jacob did when Laban came after him looking for his household gods (Genesis 31:32).

12a) The brothers are protective of Benjamin.

When the cup is found in Benjamin’s sack, they tore “their clothes in uncontrollable grief.”7 They were united in their grief and didn’t argue about what to do.

Judah made beautiful intercession for Benjamin, offering himself as a substitute to spare his father from a grief too heavy to bear. “He showed no animosity at all.”6

When Joseph was a young man, they hated him. They saw him coming and said, “Let us kill him and throw him into one of the pits.” They made up a story to tell their father. Only Reuben tried to talk them out of it. He planned to rescue Joseph later, but he was too late. The brothers sold him to a caravan of traders on their way to Egypt.

Now, they completely humbled themselves before Joseph out of love for his father and his brothers.

If their hearts hadn’t changed, they would readily leave Benjamin behind as a slave and go home. But Judah pleads for Joseph to allow him to take Benjamin’s place because he could not bear to go home and see his father in such misery.

b) Judah’s speech

Jacob’s sons spent over 20 years watching their father grieve the loss of his beloved son, Joseph, knowing they were responsible for his anguish. “Unconfessed sin hangs on you like a plague.”6

Judah lost two sons of his own, so he experienced the pain firsthand. The other brothers now had sons of their own, too.

c) Our Lord can change even the hardest of hearts.

And protect untold thousands from starvation in the process.

And I will give them one heart, and put a new spirit within them. And I will take the heart of stone out of their flesh and give them a heart of flesh (Ezekiel 11:19).

Create in me a clean heart, O God,
and renew a right spirit within me.
Cast me not away from your presence,
and take not you Holy Spirit from me.
Restore to me the joy of your salvation,
and uphold me with a willing spirit. (Psalm 51:10-12)
