Genesis Lesson 2 Day 3

Genesis 2:1-3

Day Seven of Creation

7. God created the seven-day week.

On the sixth day, God miraculously finished all of the work He set out to do.

Earth was habitable, life was created, man was put in charge, and food was provided for all.3

So on day seven, this creation project came to an end, and He rested.

He blessed the seventh day and made it holy.

8. God rested

שָׁבַת shâbath, shaw-bath’; a primitive root; to repose, i.e. desist from exertion; used in many implied relations (causative, figurative or specific):—(cause to, let, make to) cease, celebrate, cause (make) to fail, keep (sabbath), suffer to be lacking, leave, put away (down), (make to) rest, rid, still, take away. 4

God didn’t rest because He was tired.

Haven’t you known?
Haven’t you heard?
The everlasting God, Yahweh,
the Creator of the ends of the earth, doesn’t faint.
He isn’t weary.
His understanding is unsearchable. Isaiah 40:28

Because of the way God created Eden, Adam and Eve didn’t have to plant crops, fight weeds, or store food for winter. Food was readily available, so they did not need to strive. They lived in rest until after they sinned.

His creation was so perfect that there was nothing left to do. It’s like a painter rests from his painting because another brush stroke would be too much. A lawyer rests her case because she’s done all that she can do. Likewise, God rested because everything had been created perfectly and in such a fashion that it didn’t need any maintenance.

Likewise, in the new creation (2 Corinthians 5:17), we don’t have to struggle to receive from God. Instead we have to learn to rest in what has already been provided. Just as Adam wasn’t created until everything was complete and ready for him, so Jesus already provided everything we will ever need before we were saved. Now we just rest in what is already ours. We’ve already got everything. 2

9. Work and rest

God, having completed His work of creation, rests, as if to say, ‘This is the destiny of those who are My people; to rest as I rest, to rest in Me.’” (Boice) 1

Colossians 2:16-17 and Galatians 4:9-11 make it clear that Christians are not under obligation to observe the Sabbath today because Jesus fulfilled the purpose and plan of the Sabbath for us and in us (Hebrews 4:9-11). Yet Christians do not lose the Sabbath; every day is a day of rest in the finished work of Jesus Christ. Every day is specially set apart to God. 1

Scriptures also encourage us to be diligent and not to be lazy.

Personal Application

My goal is to strike a balance between labor and rest for the sake of my health, my relationships with family and friends, and especially daily time with my Heavenly Father.
