Genesis 19:1-14

7. Lot was sitting in the gate of Sodom.

Lot made his home in this prosperous but wicked city and attained enough status to sit at the city gate among the important men. In verse 7, he calls these wicked men his brothers.

The gate area of an ancient city was sort of a town-hall where the important men of the city judged disputes, conferred with one another, and supervised those who entered and left the city.

He chose to live a righteous life, and was genuinely grieved by the sin around him.

. . . delivered righteous Lot, who was very distressed by the lustful life of the wicked. 2 Peter 2:7

However, Lot and his family loved the modern city, the money, and he enjoyed the prestige and leisure of sitting at the gate.

The city grew so depraved, the outcry of the victims reached God’s attention. When these visitors came through the gate, Lot insisted they stay with him because he knew what would happen if he left them to sleep in the street.

However, he didn’t have enough influence to disuade the crowd of wicked men from demanding he send the visitors out to them. Even his future sons-in-law thought he was joking when he tried to get them to leave the city, so they died there.

8. Lot offers the men his two virgin daughters.

He risked his own life to protect these men he doesn’t know are angels, but he proposed a sinful solution to a violent, wicked problem.

a. The wicked men had no interest in the girls.

They showed no respect for Lot and his family or the guests he took into his home.

Scripture says “all the men of Sodom from every quarter, both young and old, gathered at his door.”

These citizens of Sodom clearly came to homosexually abuse and rape these two visitors. They were willing to break all principles of hospitality and morality for their own violent and sexual gratification.1

Likewise also the men, leaving the natural function of the woman, burned in their lust toward one another, men doing what is inappropriate with men, and receiving in themselves the due penalty of their error. Romans 1:27

Homosexuality is an abomination to the Lord and all righteous people. According to Romans 1:26-27, it is one of the last stages of rebellion to God and reflects a reprobate mind (Romans 1:28-32).2

b. God protected Lot and his family.

The angels reached out and, I think supernaturally, and brought Lot inside the house. “They blinded all the men, young and old, who were at the door of the house, so they gave up trying to get inside.” Genesis 19:114

Then they warned Lot to take all of his family and any others he had in the city out of that place because Yahweh sent them to destroy it.

9. Ezekiel 16:49-50

Lot was content knowing he wasn’t like the wicked people around him. He ignored the warning when the kings captured his family and Abraham came to their rescue.

In Ezekiel 16:49-50 God compared Jerusalem to the ancient city of Sodom, saying they were like sisters. The sins he mentions are pride, gluttony, and laziness, while the poor and needy suffered outside her door. “She was proud and committed detestable sins, so I wiped her out” Ezekiel 16:50 4

The life of Lot shows us that it is possible to have a saved soul and a wasted life. Lot would be rescued, but his life would accomplish nothing, as in 1 Corinthians 3:15: If anyone’s work is burned, he will suffer loss; but he himself will be saved, yet so as through fire.1
