Genesis 16:1-6

Abram, Sarai, and Hagar

11. a. A mixture of faith and unbelief

God’s specific promise to Abram was, “This man [Eleazer] will NOT be your heir, but he who will come out of your own body will be your heir.” (Genesis 15:4 emphasis added)

So although Sarai believed God would give Abram a son, she did not believe God would enable her to give birth to that son. She was now 75 and apparently decided that after years of barrenness, now past childbearing age, and because God didn’t specifically mention her in the promise, the promise didn’t include her.

Sarai still wanted to help fulfill the promise, so she chose Hagar as an Egyptian surrogate mother to give them a child.

According to the custom of that time, the child would be Abram and Sarai’s child, not Abram and Hagar’s.1

b. Wavering belief produces bad fruit.

No doubt, Sarai’s spirit was crushed from years of shame. She may have believed God loved Abram, but not her.

Genuine belief in God’s faithfulness brings us to a place of peace and rest. (Hebrews 4:11)

“Let us hold tightly without wavering to the hope we affirm, for God can be trusted to keep his promise.”4 Hebrews 10:23

12. a. Sins committed

Unbelief—”But though he had done so many signs before them, yet they didn’t believe in him.” John 12:37

Sarai believed God was in control of her womb, but she didn’t believe God could over-ride barrenness AND her advanced age.

Lack of faith—”without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is and that He is a rewarder of those who seek Him.” Hebrews 11:6

Loved human praise—”For they loved human praise more than the praise of God.” John 12:43; Galatians 1:10

Sarai felt rejected by God, a failure as a wife, and embarrassed among the other women.

Polygamy/adultery—”Therefore a man will leave his father and his mother, and will join with his wife, and they will be one flesh.” Genesis 2:24 Sarai suggested it, Abram agreed to it, and Hagar had no say in the matter. She became the victim of their sin.

Not seeking God or crying out to him—Hannah endured a similar childless fate, but she cried out to God.

She was in bitterness of soul, and prayed to Yahweh, weeping bitterly. She vowed a vow, and said, “Yahweh of Armies, if you will indeed look at the affliction of your servant and remember me, and not forget your servant, but will give to your servant a boy, then I will give him to Yahweh all the days of his life, and no razor shall come on his head.” 1 Samuel 1:10-11

Taking matters into their own hands

The sin underneath all our sins is to trust the lie of the serpent that we cannot trust the love and grace of Christ and must take matters into our own hands. Martin Luther

b. The outcome (See also Genesis 12:10-20.)

When Hagar realized she was pregnant, she treated Sarai with contempt.

Sarai told Abram it was all his fault. Abram didn’t resolve the dispute but allowed Sarai to mistreat Hagar until Hagar ran away.

As we will see later, Hagar’s son and his descendants also became a great nation. That has not turned out well.

In Genesis 12:10-20, Abram asked Sarai to lie, saying she was his sister because he was afraid the Egyptians would kill him. She went along with it and ended up taken into Pharaoh’s harem. He blessed Abram because of her until his (Pharaoh’s) household suffered and discovered Sarai was the cause.

13. Patience—It’s so hard to wait.

Patience brings obedience, peace, self-control, persistence, diligence, careful thinking, other good fruit.

The opposite of patience is agitation, weakness, frustration, fear, disobedience, and other bad fruit.
