Genesis Lesson 10 Day 3

Genesis Lesson 10,Genesis Lesson 10 Day 2, Genesis Lesson 10 Day 3,Genesis Lesson 10 Day 4,Genesis Lesson 10 Day 5

Genesis 15:7-21

The Lord cut a covenant with Abram. Genesis 15:18

In those days, contracts were made by the sacrificial cutting of animals, with the split carcasses of the animals lying on the ground. The covenant was made when parties to the agreement walked through the animal parts together, repeating the terms of the covenant. The LORD made a covenant in Genesis 15:18 is literally, “the LORD cut a covenant.”

The symbolism was plain. First, this is a covenant so serious, it is sealed with blood. Second, if I break this covenant, let this same bloodshed be poured out on my animals and me.

When Abram had his doubts and wanted assurance from the LORD, God said to him clearly, “Let’s sign a contract and settle this once for all.”1

God sets the stage for a “covenant-cutting” ceremony, almost exactly as was done in contemporary cultures of the Near East. Biblical as well as major secular covenants were established in blood.3

Jeremiah 34:18-20 refers to this same practice.

7. God’s response to Abram’s doubt

Abram humbly asks, “Lord Yahweh, how will I know that I will inherit it?”

God’s response

Gracious to Abram, his descendents, the Amorites, the Canaanites, and the Egyptians

Confirms his promise in a culturally relevant covenant contract.

God seals the contract alone because he caused Abram to fall into a deep sleep.

Lord Yahweh assumes full responsibility for the covenant.

Patient and kind, waiting for the wicked to repent. Egypt (Exodus 12:29)

8. Prophetic promises in 15:13-16 and fulfillment

Timeline: Abram’s descendents will be slaves in Egypt for 400 years. (Exodus 12:40)

Great Wealth: Delivered from Egypt with great possessions. (Exodus 12:35-36)

Possess the land: Abram’s descendents will possess the land God promised.

Long Life: Abram will live a long life and die in peace. (Genesis 25:7-8) He lived 175 years, an old, satisfied man.

Boundaries of the promised land: From the river of Egypt to the great river, the river Euphrates: the land of the Kenites, the Kenizzites, the Kadmonites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Rephaim, the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Girgashites, and the Jebusites.

For a very brief time, under Solomon (1 Kings 8:65) and possibly again under Jeroboam II (2 Kings 14:25), the children of Israel ruled all this territory, as a token of the final and permanent possession they will have in the future. (Morris)1

9. Abram was God’s friend.

So the Scripture was fulfilled which says, “Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him as righteousness,” and he was called the friend of God. (James 2:23)

Abram believed God but humbly asked God questions, and God answered them.

The angel Gabriel visited Mary (Luke 1:26-38) and Zechariah (Luke 1:5-19) with news about a baby. Both asked questions, but Gabriel’s responses show the posture of their hearts. Mary believed, and Zechariah did not.

10. God reassures us.

Jesus fulfilled his promise to send the Holy Spirit and give him to those who ask.

He sealed us, and gave us the down payment of the Holy Spirit in our hearts. 2 Corinthians 1:22

Now he who made us for this very thing is God, who also gave to us the down payment of the Spirit. 2 Corinthians 5:5

In him you also, having heard the word of the truth, the Good News of your salvation—in whom, having also believed, you were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, who is a pledge of our inheritance, to the redemption of God’s own possession, to the praise of his glory.

Holy Spirit speaks to us through promises and other words quickened to us in scripture, spoken to us through others, in night visions (dreams), awake visions, billboards, song lyrics, feelings, and many other ways unique to each person.
