Genesis Lesson 1 Day 4

Genesis 1:14-25

9. God’s creation on days four through six

The fourth day of creation

God created the Sun, Moon, and Stars.

  • Sun — Rules the day

God knew exactly how far to set the sun from the earth. A few million miles more or less and life as we know it would be impossible.

  • Moon — Rules the night

  • Stars

The fifth day of creation — Genesis 1:20-25

God created living creatures.

  • God said, “Let the waters swarm with fish and other living creatures.”
    • Great sea creatures — “the more magnificent ocean creatures such as whales and dolphins.”3

  • Every living thing that fills the waters

  • God said, “Let birds fly above the earth across the skies.”

The sixth day of creation — Genesis 1:24-25

God said, “Let the earth produce living creatures after their kind, livestock, creeping things, and animals of the earth after their kind;” and it was so.

  • Livestock

This may include other mammals such as cows, oxen, sheep, goats, camels, horses, etc. which are kept as domestic animals.
  • Creeping things

May include mice, reptiles, insects, spiders, etc.
  • Other animals or beasts that live on land

10. Light in verse 3 versus the lights in verse 14

Verse 3

According to most commentators, the light was either created by God or manifested by himself. This light separated the darkness, was observed by God as being “good” and was called “day” while the darkness was called “night.”

I must have you notice that this light came instantaneously. The Hebrew suggests this far better than our translation–it is sublimely brief. ‘Light be: light was.’ (Spurgeon)

Some say this light was God’s shekinah glory.

Even if our Good News is veiled, it is veiled in those who are dying, in whom the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelieving, that the light of the Good News of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God, should not dawn on them. For we don’t preach ourselves, but Christ Jesus as Lord, and ourselves as your servants for Jesus’ sake, seeing it is God who said, “Light will shine out of darkness,”Genesis 1:3 who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. (2 Corinthians 4:3-6 emphasis added)

Verse 14

God created plants before he created the sun. Selah.

Man always used the heavenly clock to mark and measure time, seasons, and direction.

When God set the lights in the heavens to be for signs, it probably includes what we commonly call the constellations, but was called by the ancient Hebrews the Mazzaroth (Job 38:31-32).

i. Significantly, the sequence of the zodiac is the same in every language and culture, even if the specific names of the constellations change. Also, we know the figures of the constellations suggested to us don’t look like those things at all, and, they never did. Yet the names for the figures of the constellations are the same in all cultures. This points to a common, pre-Babel beginning for all these things before the truth of the constellations was corrupted.1

11. “. . . and God saw that it was good.”

God stepped back to consider the outcome produced by his words, and he was pleased. The world he created was perfectly beautiful. Death and decay did not exist.

He created order from chaos, light in the darkness, and plants and animals out of nothingness.

I would do well to step back and observe what my words and actions create.

12. I don’t find it hard to believe there is a Creator God.

However, many do lose their faith or never had any. They wonder why, if there is a God, why he allows tidal waves, hurricanes, consuming fires, and earthquakes.  Or the suffering and death caused by starvation, accidents, Alzheimer’s, birth defects, heart attacks, strokes, cancers, and pandemics.

Many doubt because of injustice, poverty, tragedy, murder, hatred, child abuse, terrorist attacks, and so many other sorrows.

Some never see or sense the creator in a sunset, a flower, or a baby’s birth. But many of us do.

In the created world around us
we see the Eternal Artist,
Eternal Love at work. –Evelyn Underhill

The heavens declare the glory of God.
The expanse shows his handiwork. Psalm 19:1

They [the wicked] know the truth about God because he has made it obvious to them. For ever since the world was created, people have seen the earth and sky. Through everything God made, they can clearly see his invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature. So they have no excuse for not knowing God. Romans 1:19-20 (NLT)

Charles Darwin abandoned his faith in God.

Any vestige of belief in God left him when his daughter Annie died. Annie’s cruel death destroyed Charles’ tatters and belief in a moral and just universe. Later he would say that this period claimed the final death nail for his Christianity. Charles now took his stand as an unbeliever.4

Most scientists believe there is no Creator God, therefore, they search for another explanation. The greatest minds continue to uncover more questions than answers.

The intricate balance of our ecosystem argues strongly for the existence of a Creator. We live in a very complex world.1

Evolutionist Nile Eldredge wrote: “We paleontologists have said that the history of life [in the fossil record] supports [the story of gradual evolution], all the while knowing that it does not” (Johnson).1
