Genesis 1:1-2

It is precisely because people have abandoned the truth of Genesis that society is in such disarray.1

3. The first sentence in the Holy Bible reveals Elohim as Creator of heavens and earth.

“In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.”

Beginning —

רֵאשִׁית rêʼshîyth, ray-sheeth’; from the same as H7218; the first, in place, time, order or rank (specifically, a firstfruit) — beginning, chief(-est), first(-fruits, part, time), principal thing.3

I hoped the Hebrew word re’shiyth would be a less general term. But it’s not unusual that ancient languages had smaller vocabularies than we do today.

Created —

בָּרָא bârâʼ, baw-raw’; a primitive root; (absolutely) to create; . . . choose, create (creator), cut down, dispatch, do, make (fat).3

Bara is the Hebrew word most often used to express God’s unique ability to create something out of nothing.

Bara means to create out of nothing, showing that God created the world out of nothing, not out of Himself [or pre-existing matter or particles]. God is separate from His creation. Unlike Eastern and pantheistic perceptions of god, the Bible teaches the universe could perish yet He would remain.1

This concept reverberates throughout the Bible.

By faith, we understand that the universe has been framed by the word of God, so that what is seen has not been made out of things which are visible. Hebrews 11:3

God has made the earth by his power. He has established the world by his wisdom,
and by his understanding has he stretched out the heavens. Jeremiah 10:12

The God who made the world and all things in it, he, being Lord of heaven and earth, doesn’t dwell in temples made with hands. He isn’t served by men’s hands, as though he needed anything, seeing he himself gives to all life and breath, and all things. Acts 17:24-25

For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, because that which is known of God is revealed in them, for God revealed it to them. For the invisible things of him since the creation of the world are clearly seen, being perceived through the things that are made, even his everlasting power and divinity, that they may be without excuse. Romans 1:18-20

Three more Hebrew words for created:

Three additional words to define creation are also used throughout Genesis chapter 1 and elsewhere in scripture. Unlike bara, the following can also refer to man’s creative work.

  • Asah — to do or make, in the broadest sense and widest application . . . accomplish, advance . . .3
  • Yatsar — to form, fashion or frame; to mould into a form; especially as a potter(see Genesis 2:7) This word indicates creating with a purpose in mind.
  • Kuyn — to establish, to found (see Jeremiah 10:12 above)

4. Thought provoking

The study of human origins seems to be a field in which each discovery raises the debate to a more sophisticated level of uncertainty.” (Christopher Stringer of the Natural Museum of London)

God didn’t inspire the writer of Genesis to describe him or prove his existence.

Creation itself declares the existence of Elohim, the creator. The heavens shall declare his righteousness, for God himself is judge. Selah. (Psalm 50:6)

God created with a purpose in mind. The history of God’s interactions with man further reveal his purposes and his nature — his characteristics and his attributes.

Life without God lacks meaning and purpose.

For by him all things were created in the heavens and on the earth, visible things and invisible things, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things have been created through him and for him. (Colossians 1:16, emphasis added)
