Matthew Lesson 3 Day 3

Matthew 3:5-10

John the Baptizer prepares the way announcing, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand!”

“Josephus [historian] actually wrote more about John the Baptist than he did about Jesus. The influence of John the Baptist is evident decades after his ministry began, as seen in Acts 18:25 and 19:3.”1

Jews didn’t see themselves as sinners. They were God’s chosen race. Ceremonial immersion baptism was for Gentiles converting to Judaism.

Yet Matthew stresses “ALL Judea and ALL the region about the Jordan were going out to him to be baptized by him . . . confessing their sins.” (vs 5 emphasis added)

This was a new thing—a revival!

6) Confession and true repentance

Confess—admit our sins to each another and pray for each other so that we may be healed, forgiven, and cleansed from everything we’ve done wrong.

  • Turn back
  • Change the way you think and act
  • Turn toward God
  • Produces behavior changes

7a) Fruit of repentance

  • Do things that prove I have turned to God and changed the way I think and act.
  • Return to the merciful, compassionate, patient, forgiving, loving LORD my God.
  • God’s kindness is meant to lead me to repent.
  • Be disgusted in a godly way about any ungodly behavior in my life.

b) My prayer

“O LORD, you have searched me and known me (Psalm 139:1)
Who can discern his own errors? Cleanse me from my hidden faults. (Psalm 19:12)
Help me strive to be at peace with everyone, and holiness. . .And that I will not fail to obtain the grace of God; that no root of bitterness springs up and troubles me, and others. (Hebrews 12:14-15 paraphrased)
“Lord, I respond to your call and your conviction, returning to you now, repenting of all my idols and acknowledging you as Lord.” (source) Amen.
