Matthew Lesson 18 Day 4

Matthew 17:14-21

9.  A boy is healed

a.  The father of a demon-possessed boy approached Him.

The next day, when Jesus, Peter, James, and John came down the mountain, they found a large crowd gathered. A man kneeled down in front of Jesus and asked him to look at his only child who is tormented by an evil spirit.

He believes Jesus can help his son even though the disciples already tried and failed.

b.  “All things are possible for one who believes.”

When Jesus hears that his disciples failed to cast out the demon he said,

“O faithless generation, how long am I to be with you? How long am I to bear with you? Bring him to me.” (Mark 9:19)

Jesus questions the father, “How long has this been happening?” After hearing the man’s answer Jesus says, “All things are possible for one who believes.” The father replies, “I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief!” (Mark 9:24)

Jesus speaks to the demon and commands it to come out of him and never enter him again. After screaming and tormenting the boy, the demon finally came out.

Later when Jesus is alone with his disciples, they asked him why they were unable to cast it out. Jesus said, “This kind [of evil spirit] cannot be driven out by anything but prayer.” Mark 9:29 (emphasis added)

Jesus’ reply in Matthew 17:20 reads, “Because of your little faith.”

James 5:15 says, “The prayer of faith will save the distressed one, and the Lord will raise him up . . .” (YLT)

Some demons are more powerful than others.

“Then it goes and brings seven other spirits more evil than itself, and they enter and dwell there. And the last state of that person is worse than the first.” Luke 11:26

10. Jesus teaches about faith

Unbelief—our earthly, carnal, un-renewed mind at war with our spirit

a. Little faith

Jesus said they had unbelief. Faith is such a powerful force, only a tiny bit can accomplish huge results. Getting rid of unbelief is important. Faith is a seed that we can nurture. It comes by hearing the word of God (Romans 10:17) Jesus put faith into action by speaking to the problem and exercising the authority Jesus gave them.

b. Personal

Remember that Jesus expects and empowers us to do even greater works than he did. The only thing stopping me is the un-renewed part of my mind. I want to hear the words “good and faithful servant” and not “you had so little faith.”

11.  Jesus rebuked little faith.

Yet he blesses small faith. The faith isn’t in ourselves. Our faith is in the Divine Power Source. If we know and truly believe the resurrected Lord is who he says he is, our faith in him is powerful.

12. a. Faith to heal the sick.

b. Focus on who HE is instead of my weakness.
