Matthew Lesson 10 Day 2

Matthew 9:1–8

3) Jesus, seeing their faith

Marks’ account in Mark 2:3-12

Jesus saw the faith of the four men who were determined to get their paralyzed friend to Jesus.

When the people heard Jesus had come to Capernaum, many gathered in and around a house. Luke’s account says the crowds came from every village of Galilee and from Judea and Jerusalem.

The men couldn’t even get near the doorway so they made a hole in the roof and lowered their friend through it.

“Houses had a flat roof, reached by an outside stair and used for additional living space.”5

Jesus admires and commends us when we persistently intercede with the same determination as these men. He also healed the man.

4a) Jesus is the Son of God.

  • vs. 2 “Your sins are forgiven.”
  • vs.  4 “Knowing their thoughts…”
  • vs. 6 “But I want you to know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins.”
  • vs. 6c-7a (Jesus said) “Get up, take your mat and go home.” Then the man got up and went home.”

b) Reactions

The religious leaders questioned in the hearts. They understood that Jesus claimed to do something that only God can do but assumed that Jesus blasphemed because they didn’t believe He was God.

“They did not call him ‘man’; the word is in italics in our version. They did not know what to call him even in their hearts; they meant ‘this’ – this upstart, this nobody, this strange being.” (Spurgeon)

Jesus heard their evil thoughts and answers their questions by asking if it is easier to say “Your sins are forgiven” or to say “Arise and walk?” Both require a miracle.

The no longer paralyzed man got up without assistance, picked up his mat, and went home. Luke’s account says he left praising God!
(I would love to see that happen in person. I have seen it in a video.)

The crowd who witnessed the miracle “were all amazed and recognized and praised and thanked God, saying, we have never seen anything like this before!” Mark 2:12 AMPC

5) Jesus power and authority

“Jesus came to them [disciples] and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
