Genesis Lesson 29 Day 5

Genesis 50:22-26

By faith Joseph, at the end of his life, made mention of the exodus of the Israelites and gave directions concerning his bones (Hebrews 11:22).

16) Genesis 50:24-25 Joseph said to his brothers, “I am about to die.”

Joseph buried Jacob when he was 56 and died in faith at 110.

Joseph is quoted as saying something very similar to what his father Jacob said to him on his deathbed in Genesis 48:21.

  • I’m about to die.
  • God [Elohim] will visit you, will be with you [take care of you].
  • He will take you back to the land He swore to give to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
  • Then again he says, God will surely visit you.

Like Jacob,, Joseph commanded the brothers to swear a similar oath. (Genesis 49:29; 50:5)

  • Carry my bones back with you.

400 years later, Moses took the bones of Joseph with him because Joseph had made the Israelites swear an oath. He had said, “God will surely come to your aid, and then you must carry my bones up with you from this place” (Exodus 13:19).

However, Joshua did not bury him with the patriarchs at Hebron. Rather, Joseph was buried in the field Jacob had bought at Shechem (33:19; Joshua 24:32).
Genesis concludes on a somber note, yet with a restrained hope that looks down the years toward God’s deliverance”5

17) Joseph spent most of his life in Egypt.

While Joseph was dying, faith led him to speak about the Israelites leaving Egypt and give them instructions about burying his bones (Hebrews 11:22 NOG).

After spending most of his life in Egypt, Joseph became the patriarch of his family. He took care of the Egyptians and his own family. In death, he honored God’s covenant instead of reveling in his lofty position in Egypt.

He was responsible for bringing his family into Egypt, but now he turns his attention to the future, making sure they return as a family and take his body to their promised land.

18) The deaths of Jacob and Joseph Genesis 49-50

Joseph forgave his brothers and never turned his back on his family. He wept at the thought that they were still afraid of retaliation after their father’s death. Their guilt and shame caused them to mistrust Joseph who completely forgave them and loved them.

God completely loves us so much that He sacrificed His only Son, yet we sometimes doubt His loving kindness and goodness.

  • Hold tightly to the vision God gives us early in life.
  • Expect God’s favor.
  • Remain faithful.
  • Don’t compromise, especially when the vision takes longer than we expect.
  • Believe that God is sufficient. He gives us the gifts we need to fulfill His purpose.
  • Sometimes His promises take a long time to be fulfilled.
  • Trust God

And we know that for those who love God, all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose (Romans 8:28).

Joseph died looking forward to God’s unfolding plan of redemption, and that is where the Book of Genesis – the Book of Beginnings – ends. It concludes looking forward to the continuation of God’s eternal, loving, wise plan.1
