Genesis 28:12-15

Jacob meets the Lord in a dream at Bethel.

9) Jacob has a dream.

. . . fatigued by travel, saddened by thoughts of home, doubtless meditating on his mother, and more than likely pondering the great benediction of his aged and, to all appearance, dying father. (Pulpit Commentary)

In his dream, he saw a stairway on earth that reached heaven. He watched angels were using it to go up to heaven and down to earth. Then the I AM, the Lord, introduced Himself to Jacob as the God of his grandfather Abraham and his father Isaac.

In John 1:51, Jesus says to Nathanael, “Truly, truly, I say to you, you will see heaven opened, and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.” (The Greek for you is plural twice in this verse3 so Jesus wasn’t only speaking to Nathanael.) Yes, Lord, I’m in!

Jesus made it clear that He is the access door to heaven. He didn’t just show us the way, He is the way. “Jesus said to [Thomas], ‘I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.'” (John 14:6)

10) God’s promises to Jacob

The Lord extended grace to Jacob in that moment, reassuring him that he had not messed up so badly that the covenant blessing was called off.

a) Land

I will give the land you’re sleeping on to you and your descendants.

In this promise alone, Jacob knows he is forgiven, he will make it to Paddan Aram, he will find a wife, and have children.

b) Descendants

His offspring will be too many to count, and spread in all directions.

c) Blessing

You and your offspring will bless all the families of the earth.

d) God’s presence with him

The I AM said, “I am with you and will keep you wherever you go, and will bring you back to this land. For I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you.”

When Jacob woke up, he said, “Surely the Lord is in this place, and I did not know it. . . “This is none other than the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven.”

11) God’s promises include dreams.

Jacob’s dream is one many dreams recorded throughout scripture. The word dream in various forms is mentioned 123 times in the King James Version. “At least twenty-one dreams are described, most of which are interpreted. . . Sixteen books of the Bible contain explicit information about dreams.” (Adventures in Dreaming by Justin Perry)*(affiliate link)

In Acts 2:17-18, Peter quotes this promise from Joel 2:28-32 saying,

And in the last days it shall be, God declares, that I will pour out my spirit on all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams; even on my male servants and female servants in those days I will pour out my spirit, and they shall prophesy.

I want to receive direction and revelation through dreams.
