Acts 23:12-35

“One of Luke’s prime motives in writing his twofold history is to demonstrate that there is no substance in this charge of subversion brought not only against Paul but against Christians in general – that competent and impartial judges had repeatedly confirmed the innocence of the Christian movement and the Christian missionaries in respect of Roman law.” (Bruce)1

12. The Jews’ plot against Paul

Paul’s accusers, supposedly zealous for God, asked the chief priests and elders to lie to the Roman commander and arrange an opportunity to ambush Paul.

Verse 12 is a direct fulfillment of Jesus’ words in John 16:2—”They will put you out of the synagogues. Yes, the time comes that whoever kills you will think that he offers service to God.”2

Jesus explained it this way—

“They will do these things because they have not known the Father, nor me.” (John 16:3)

13. Anger toward believers today

In the US, those in control of the media tolerate most religions but not Christianity.

We believe Jesus Christ is the only way to the one true God.

They consider us—

  • Exclusive
  • Narrow minded
  • Bigoted
  • Anti women’s choice (to abort their babies)

The reason for the anger toward believers today is the same as it was during Paul’s time. They don’t know the Father, and they don’t know Jesus Christ.

14. The challenge to be courageous and obedient—

Most of my prayers during the spread of coronavirus around the world have centered on protection for my family, friends, and believers worldwide.

Today I feel challenged to pray (and speak out somehow) that my nation and others will heed God’s words in 2 Chronicles 7:13-15

If I shut up the heavens so that there is no rain, or if I command the locust swarms to eat up all of your crops, or if I send an epidemic among you, then if my people will humble themselves and pray, and search for me, and turn from their wicked ways, I will hear them from heaven and forgive their sins and heal their land. I will listen, wide awake, to every prayer made in this place. (NLT)

In a recent report, Franklin Graham points out the hypocrisy of Andrew Cuomo for saying human life is ‘Not Expendable’ when “In 2017 alone, 105,380 babies lost their lives by abortion in New York.” 3

In the past year, many states, including New York and my own, voted to allow late-term and full-term abortions.

Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil;
who put darkness for light,
and light for darkness;
who put bitter for sweet,
and sweet for bitter!

Lord, help me speak out.
