Questions for Acts and Letters of the Apostles Lesson 19

Paul writes to correct an erroneous teaching.

6. a. Before Christ returns

—A falling away, a rebellion, a definite rejection of God

Bible scholars debate if it refers to an apostasy among those who once followed God or a general worldwide rebellion. . . . Paul may have both in mind. (Enduring Word)

—The man of lawlessness (sin) is revealed.

b. The man of lawlessness

Lawlessness—the outlaw, the son of destruction, doom, perdition who is raising himself up against every God and religious system “so that he in the sanctuary of God as God hath sat down, shewing himself off that he is God — [the day doth not come].” (2 Thes 2:4 Youngs Literal Translation)

This man of sin is a prominent figure in the Bible, and the ultimate personification of the spirit of the Antichrist spoken of in 1 John 4:2-3. He will no doubt live many years before the Great Tribulation but will only be revealed as the man of sin during that period. The idea behind the title man of sin is that “Sin has such absolute domination over him that he seems to be the very embodiment of it.” (Hiebert) (Enduring Word)

—He sits as God in the temple of God (in the holy of holies?)

From Revelation 13

—Pours out blasphemies and slanders against God, His name and those who live in heaven.

—Permitted to make war with the saints to overcome them.

—Given authority over every tribe, people, language, and nation.

—Everyone on earth will bow down and worship him “whose names have not been written in the scroll of the life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.” (Rev 13:8 YLT)

—Of the ones whose names are written in the Lamb’s book of life, some will go into captivity and some will be killed. “This is a call for the endurance and faithfulness of the holy believers. TPT” (Rev. 13:9-10)

Rev. 13:10 confuses me especially after reading five different translations. Then I read this footnote in The Passion Translation:

This is one of the more difficult verses in Revelation to translate and interpret, with many variations found in differing manuscripts. It could also be translated “If anyone is destined for captivity, into captivity he goes. If anyone is destined to be killed by the sword, by the sword he will be killed.” See also Jer. 15:2. (emphasis added)

Another beast will come up out of the ground.

—It has two horns like a lamb but sounds like the dragon.

—”Uses the full authority of the first animal in its presence.” (Rev 13:12 Phillips)

—Compels all the people of the earth to worship the first beast.

—”He performs great signs, even making fire come down out of the sky in the sight of people.” (Rev 13:13 WEB)

–7. a. The believers’ response to someone posing as Paul

The Thessalonians were deceived into believing they were in the great tribulation already, that Jesus already came, or perhaps in the middle of it.

They became unsettled and shaken in their minds, disturbed and troubled.

b. The Spirit of Truth

We must rely on the Spirit of Truth.

Jesus said, “Don’t let your heart be troubled. Believe in God. Believe also in me. In my Father’s house are many homes. If it weren’t so, I would have told you. I am going to prepare a place for you. If I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will receive you to myself; that where I am, you may be there also. (John 14:1-3 WEB)

Jesus also warned us about false messiahs and false prophets.

For false messiahs and false prophets will rise up and perform great signs and wonders so as to deceive, if possible, even God’s chosen ones. See, I have warned you about this ahead of time.

So if someone tells you, ‘Look, the Messiah is out in the desert,’ don’t bother to go and look. Or, ‘Look, he is hiding here,’ don’t believe it! For as the lightning flashes in the east and shines to the west, so it will be when the Son of Man comes. (Matthew 24:24-27 NLT)

c. Personal response

After this lesson and the entire Revelation study a few years ago, I’m no more certain about the end times scenario. Bible scholars still disagree. As for me, I plan to continue doing what the Spirit leads me to do and stay close to Jesus.
