Hebrews 7

Questions for Acts and Letters of the Apostles Lesson 14

Our High Priest, Jesus, the Anointed One

11. a. Role and duties of Levitical priests

Leviticus 10:11; 16:9; Numbers 1:53 and others.

The primary role of the High Priest was to serve as an intermediary between God and his people.

Originally a hereditary office, the High Priest usually held his position for life. “He “was considered the highest ranking spiritual leader among the Israelites.” (link)

Teach the children of Israel all the decrees Yahweh spoke to them through Moses. (Leviticus 10:11)

Present the sin offering for himself and the whole community (Leviticus 16:9), sprinkle the blood on the mercy seat, and burn incense (symbolic of intercession) behind the veil in the Most Holy Place once a year on Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement. (Leviticus 16:14 emphasis added)

Wear the breast plate (חֹשֶׁן ẖošen) containing the Urim and Thummim used to determine God’s will concerning judgment (Exodus 28:30).

The High Priest and all “the Levites will camp around the Tabernacle of the Covenant to protect the community of Israel from the Lord’s anger. The Levites are responsible to stand guard around the Tabernacle.” (Numbers 1:53 NLT emphasis added)

b. Comparison of Melchizedek and Christ

Differences between Christ and Melchizedek.

  • Luke and Matthew document Jesus’ genealogy through Joseph and through Mary.
Melchizedek’s parents and genealogy are unknown.
  • Abraham voluntarily gave a tenth of all the recovered goods to Melchizedek. Mary anointed Jesus’ with the perfume that many believe was her inheritance. (It was worth a year’s wages.)

Similarities

  • Melchizedek is a highly honored priest brought out bread and wine.
When John the Baptist baptized Jesus, a voice from heaven said, “This Is my son in whom I am well pleased.” Jesus initiated communion with bread and wine.
  • Melchizedek means king of righteousness. King of Salem means king of peace.
Jesus lived a life of perfect righteousness. He is the righteous Son of God. He is the prince of peace and King.
  • Melchizedek was made like the Son of God. (v. 3)
Jesus is the Son of God. As David Guzik points out, “It really isn’t that Jesus has Melchizedek’s kind of priesthood. Instead, Melchizedek has Jesus’ kind of priesthood.”
  • Melchizedek and Jesus live perpetually. (v. 3, 8 see AMPC) (Many believe Melchizedek was the pre-incarnate Jesus.)
  • Neither Jesus nor Melchizedek descended from the lineage of Levi.

c. Hebrews 7:11-28 — the need for a new priesthood

  • “The law appointed flawed men as high priests.” (v. 28 TPT)
  • The priesthood of Levi didn’t achieve the perfection God intended.
  • If the priesthood of Levi . . . could have achieved the perfection God intended, why did God need to establish a different priesthood, with a priest of the order of Melchizedek. (v. 11 NLT)
  • “Now when morning had come, all the chief priests and the elders of the people took counsel against Jesus to put him to death.” (Matthew 27:1)

12. Christ is our perfect, permanent intercessor.

Jesus experienced life as a human but did not sin.

He offered himself as a sacrifice once and for all, not just for Israel.

He is our High Priest and intercessor forever.

He holds the highest place of honor in heaven. (v. 26)

Jesus as High Priest of a Better Covenant

The law made nothing perfect.

“Jesus has become the collateral of a better covenant. ” (v. 22)

“He is able also to save to the uttermost (completely, perfectly, finally, and for all time and eternity) those who come to God through Him, since He is always living to make petition to God and intercede with Him and intervene for them.” (v. 25 AMPC)

And there’s even more exciting news! The veil was torn and through Jesus we may enter the Holy Place of God’s presence! In fact, Paul writes to the Corinthians, “Your body is now the sacred temple of the Spirit of Holiness, who lives in you? You don’t belong to yourself any longer, for the gift of God, the Holy Spirit, lives inside your sanctuary.” (1 Corinthians 6:19 TPT)

Yahweh has sworn, and will not change his mind:
“You are a priest forever in the order of Melchizedek.” (Psalm 110:4)
