Questions for Acts and Letters of the Apostles Lesson 13

The Promise of Rest

12. a. Rest

Unbelief kept the generation that escaped Egypt from entering Canaan. The promise remains of entering His rest, and we can enter into that rest by faith. Unbelief will make us fall short of the rest God has for us. (Enduring Word)

v. 1 — God made a promise to Israel and that promise still stands. The blood of the Passover Lamb saved them from death. They did not believe God but continued to see themselves as citizens of Egypt. Because of their unbelief, that generation did not entire the land of promise. This promise of rest foreshadows Jesus.

v. 4 — “On the seventh day, God rested from all his work. (NLT)” He rested because creation was complete, not because he was tired.

v. 6 – 7 — In Psalm 95:11, David wrote, “They will not enter into my rest.” So even though Joshua took the next generation into Canaan, they did not enter God’s rest either.

v. 9 — “Sabbath rest for the people of God” — Jesus said, “It is finished.” because he completed his sacrifice as the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. (John 1:36)

b. Entering God’s rest

Those who legalistically observe the Sabbath today with the belief that the Lord is angry with those who don’t are missing the true meaning of the Sabbath. They are really Sabbath breakers. True Sabbath keepers in the NT are those who don’t try to relate to the Lord by their holiness but totally rely on what Jesus did for them to make them acceptable to the Lord. That is a relationship to be enjoyed every day of our lives and not a single day per week (AWLC).

I entered this rest when I believed. Now I labor to rest in the finished work of the cross instead of trying to earn it or feel worthy. Human nature has a hard time accepting God’s extravagant gift of mercy, grace and love.

“This place of rest is so wonderful it should concern us when others or we seem to come short of it. It isn’t enough to almost enter His rest; we don’t want to come short of it. (v. 1 Enduring Word)

13. Laboring in the word is a good way to enter his rest.

“Let the elders who rule well be counted worthy of double honor, especially those who labor in the word and in teaching. (1 Timothy 5:17)

The word of God is living and active, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and is able to discern the thoughts and intentions of the heart.

Person application

Fall in love with my creator, receive God’s word mixed with faith, and remember he is my example for rest.
