Acts 13:42-52

Questions

Paul and Barnabas persecuted

8. “…when the Jews saw the multitudes, they were filled with jealousy…” (vs. 45)

“The next Sabbath, almost the whole city was gathered together to hear the word of God.” (vs, 44)  When the Jews saw the popularity of Paul and Barnabas and their message, they became jealous “and contradicted the things which were spoken by Paul, and blasphemed.”

“Pride leads to conflict; those who take advice are wise.” (Proverbs 13:10 NLT)

Paul and Barnabas spoke out boldly saying, “It was necessary that God’s word should be spoken to you first. Since indeed you thrust it from yourselves, and judge yourselves unworthy of eternal life, behold, we turn to the Gentiles.” (vs. 46)

They quote Isaiah 49:6: “I have set you as a light for the Gentiles, that you should bring salvation to the uttermost parts of the earth.” (vs. 47)

The Gentiles loved this and glorified God. The Jews insisted that Gentiles convert to Judaism and get circumcised. Paul said they don’t have to go through Judaism. All they have to do is go through Christ.

The Jews threw Paul and Barnabas out of Iconium.

Paul and Barnabas’ response

They shook the dust off their feet just as Jesus instructed.

9. Serving God and our expectations

God called Paul to the gentiles, but he continued to speak in the Jewish synagogues. The Jews allowed gentiles to come and listen to scripture reading and commentary, but Paul’s message and the good excitement it stirred up also stirred the Jewish leaders to jealousy.

We obey the Holy Spirit. Sometimes it causes a revival and sometimes a riot.

10. Hindrances

Bible study and writing:

Distractions and interruptions

Lack of focus

Inadequate revelation and understanding

Solutions

Perservere

Press in for revelation and understanding

Rely on God’s strength

Don’t quit

Words of encouragement

Hesitancy

Timidity and feeling vulnerable

Forgetful

Solutions

Write it down as soon as it comes to me.

If possible, tell the person immediately.

Remember that I asked the Holy Spirit to use me to encourage others.

Ignore embarrassment.

While writing this, I remembered someone I forgot to contact. Before I fell asleep last night, I thought of what I should say. So just now, I paused and sent her a text message. Oops, I quickly received the reply “you have the wrong number.” I sent my initial text to the correct person in my database, so she has a new number. Or doesn’t want to hear from me. (Funny how my mind works. Time to practice ignoring embarrassment.) I hope the person I did reach didn’t mind being called a “lovely woman of God.”
