Questions

9. Arm ourselves with the way Jesus thinks.

Jesus yielded and committed himself to do the Father’s will. He was innocent, yet he endured suffering in his flesh for the world’s sin. Peter says, “We put on as armor the same mind.” (Wuest NT)

“[Jesus] personally carried our sins in his body on the cross so that we can be dead to sin and live for what is right. By his wounds you are healed.” 1 Peter 2:24 NLT

“Sin has no more dominion or effect on Jesus now. We should think the same way.” AWLC

“For God made the only one who did not know sin to become sin for us, so that we who did not know righteousness might become the righteousness of God through our union with him.” 2 Corinthians 5:21 TPT (emphasis added)

We should live like Jesus. He overcame sin for us and said, “It is finished.” We should not serve sin or selfish interests.

Then Jesus said to his disciples, “If you truly want to follow me, you should at once completely reject and disown your own life. And you must be willing to share my cross and experience it as your own, as you continually surrender to my ways. Matthew 16:24 TPT

The world thinks a laid-down lover of Jesus Christ is weird. Those who forsake all to follow him think the world is weird.

Beloved friends, what should be our proper response to God’s marvelous mercies? I encourage you to surrender yourselves to God to be his sacred, living sacrifices. And live in holiness, experiencing all that delights his heart. For this becomes your genuine expression of worship. Romans 12:1 TPT

10. Don’t be astonished at the fiery trial. (vs. 12)

While we read and hear about attacks on Christians even in the US, most of us don’t know anyone who impacted directly.

Our culture teaches us to set goals, make plans and live our dreams, so we work and hope for prosperity, good health, and happy families.

There’s also this belief that bad things shouldn’t happen to good (or at least not as bad as most) people.

One thing I’ve noticed in BSF is that most of the women live with suffering. It’s what causes us to draw near to God and his word in a deeper way. It’s why we bond.

Peter encourages us to do just that. Form bonds of love with believers — share meals or a place to sleep.

11. Prepare for suffering

Stay sound minded and self-controlled and alert for the practice of prayer.

Watchful prayer keeps us alert to the Spirit.

We need an anchor.

The commitment God calls us to have is nothing greater than the commitment Jesus had in enduring suffering for our salvation. In the last days, we need to have a commitment to God that will endure through great struggles. (Enduring Word)

Breathe. Let Jesus speak to your soul and to your circumstances. Read the Psalms until you find the one he’s giving you for this season of your life. Stand. Let his love strengthen you for all you need to deal with spiritually, emotionally, and physically. Take a confident step. Everywhere you go, you’re walking in God’s promises. 12. God has a plan for my life.

Jesus says to his [true] disciples,

Anyone who intends to come with me has to let me lead. You’re not in the driver’s seat; I am. Don’t run from suffering; embrace it. Follow me and I’ll show you how. Self-help is no help at all. Self-sacrifice is the way, my way, to finding yourself, your true self. What kind of deal is it to get everything you want but lose yourself? What could you ever trade your soul for? Matthew 16:24-26 MSG
